Electric or gas mod for Brinkman vertical box ?

I have one of the vertical square Brinkman smokers I haven't used since getting a horizontal offset stick burner. There are times I would like to smoke something and not have to babysit the smoker so much and also be easier to regulate a low temp for summer sausage.

anyone ever put a propane burner or electric element in one of these?  did it work ok, or was it a pain?

probably end up buying a MES or similar someday, but I like to tinker with modding things

thanks.  mine is like the top one which is a two door vertical. looks pretty simple to mod in that fashion.
