Congrats on getting the mod working! I had that same feeling when I finally got around to doing mine: why didn't I do this sooner?

BTW, I too discovered the idea of adding "scrubbers" to the conduit and they definitely do catch a fair amount of crud.

Nice to hear that all went well!

If you notice an initially strong or odd taste to your cold smoked items it may likely be caused by stale smoke. Without the draft caused by heat of the element (no heat cold smoke) the smoke can linger and become stale before it circulates out of the smoker.

I had this happen with my MES but then I built a little cold smoker assist device that solved the problem. I rolled up cardboard into a tube, but a hole, and attached a 12v blower fan (home made computer fan with 12v plug spliced), so that when plugged in it would blow UP the tube and cause a draft to suck smoke up and out of the smoker to keep from having stale lingering smoke. I put the tube over my MES vent and plug it in.
Worked like a charm to solve my smoke flavor issues on my cold smoked salmon lox :)
Here is my goofy contraption but extremely effective contraption. I hope this info helps :)
