We actually bypass Publix, Ingles , etc for Kroger meats. We find them to be better all around. Expecially steaks. I got a Rib Roast last week on sale, made Saturday, pics and report coming in later. We've always found their fresh meats excellent. Sam's too.

Like ANY grocer, prepackaged meat that contains seasonings/marinades are going to most likely be disappointing and no doubt whoever attempted to smoke one of these came away with less than good eats, BUT that doesn't translate into don't buy meat from (in this case) Kroger. It means they should have purchased cut meat and NOT prepackaged. If you buy only cut meat (suggest Choice vs Select) and not from the "bargain" section you will be fine.

Yeah, here in Knoxville, the pre-marinated Tri-tips are all that I can ever find. I bought two of the different seasonings, and I won't buy them again. I get Kroger meat all of the time without issue. I actually got some nice rib roasts today :emoji_anguished:

Aldi and UGO occasionally have the unseasoned ones. I have only ever seen them once at Kroger's.

I guess I interpreted a previous poster's comments as meaning stay away from Kroger.. I was wrong after being educated by the great folks on here.

I like the packaged ribs at publix they don't have a solution brine in them and quality is first rate

We like a lot of the meats and other stuff from Publix but the prices are high on most everything when compared to other places. We don't have any Kroger's around here our little city only has a Winn Dixie and a Walmart. It's a 30-40 mile drive to Publix, Sam's, Costco or a "Butcher Shop". Winn Dixie usually has some good meat except their "Ranch Hand" line of meat which we find tough every time we've tried it to the point we don't buy any of it anymore no matter how cheap they make it. We did swing into Publix yesterday for something and I noticed they had some good looking rib roasts on sale for 5.99 a lb

Kroger meat is about all I smoke to be honest. Ours is a "Fred Meyer", but its all Kroger products. Pork ribs, beef ribs, brisket, rib roasts, all cuts of steak, its all Kroger. I usually dont buy tri-tip from them, its expensive at around $6-9/lb. We have a local restaurant supply that has choice tri-tip for $3.65/lb or choice Angus for $4.25/lb. Krogers running a special on their rib roasts right nor for $5.97/lb, will be grabbing a few. Have been grabbing their NY Roasts for $4.77/lb and cutting them into strip steaks and freezing for later. It's usually all quality meat. I did get some T-bones from them a few months back cheap, like $4.99/lb cheap and they are shoe leather.

The one you have to watch for is Costco. Some of them will "Blade Tenderize" their meat, in other words they stab it all over with small blades to soften it up. In doing so they introduce bacteria deep into the roasts and steaks, thus if you like rare meat you could get very sick from their meat. It will say on the label if it is blade tenderized.
