Does anybody DIY an incompletetly-burned lump charcoal?

Typical lump charcoal is burned to the point of brittleness - any piece will crush down to black powder; there's none of the structural integrity of the wood. It burns cleanly, and then we add wood chunks for flavor.

But what if you snuffed the lump before it was completely black? Maybe 75% or 80% burned, with a little bit of flavor left in it? Then on the second burn, it should still make a little bit of smoke.

I've snuffed fires in Webers, so it should be easy to do. I suppose a UDS could do it, too.
 
I used to do that with slightly used briquettes.  I would then mix them with fresh for my next grilling session.

You don't save much money that way.

I have never tried it with lump and don't think I would?
