My wife and I have done several toppings over the years; cheese, sour cream, chopped fresh onions. We've done garlic bread on the side, dipping it in the chili. We really like eating chili with hint of lime tortilla chips. (I'm talking, sort of, standard chili...no verde, or stuff like butternut squash weirdness or even what I call my "Italian chili").

I dont use cheese much anymore, I get tired of the stringiness and the texture of the chili changes and the cheese starts collecting on the spoon weirdly. I dont use sour cream anymore...it doesn't taste bad but turns it in to "cream of chili". After years of using various toppings, I've come back to basics and just like the flavor and texture of the chili...with hint of lime tortilla chips! My wife will do it all, the cheese, sour cream, chopped onions (if I put them out), avocado AND chips...and she will stir it all up!:emoji_anguished::emoji_astonished:

I know people use avocado too. I have one perfectly ripe and making my first chili of the season tonight. My first thought was to cube it up and top the chili with it...then said nah, I'll eat like we often do; we just chunk or wedge it, splay on a small plate and top with lime juice and maybe a light sprinkle of Tajin. I like some lime juice, pinch of salt, light sprinkle of garlic granules and a dash of cayenne...but I digress, this is a chili toppings thread if anyone cares to play!

What's your preferences? So many takes on "what chili is" out there, the different approaches make it interesting. Solid meat, ground meat, beans, no beans, tomatoes, no tomatoes, etc.. I dont even want to say what my chili is for fear of starting that "what constitutes proper chili" argument!

I like cornbread on the side, but chopped white onions is one I do when I do eat a bowl. My home pickled jalapeno mix is a regular also. I'm fairly simple with it.

We make ours with hamburger, chili beans, onion, tomato juice, seasonings. Sometimes we top with sour cream and cheese but not always. I really like fresh baked bread to dip in my bowl but don't have it often... my wife would prefer a cinnamon roll. Also my wife will dip saltine crackers in her chili... my saltines get crushed up on top of my chili... always!

I keep it simple much like you do. I do like diced white onion occasionally and sometimes don’t mind a spoonful of cottage cheese, otherwise just pretty straightforward.

Avocado, green or white onion. Jalapeño is good or maybe some habanero. Sour cream maybe if I’m in the mood. I like tortillas if we have some. I think that’s about it.

Avocado is a new one to me. Usually I dip saltines and buttered bread into my chili. Not opposed to Fritos on occasion. I'm also in a area where cinnamon rolls are often served along with chili.

I'm in the camp of "whatever grabs my attention in the fridge"

Never been a fan of cornbread with chili. Corn chips, that's a whole different story.

'Merican Cheese has become my preferred chili cheese. Not Kraft singles. Kraft deluxe is ok, but Food Lion white American has long been my go to for many things. Queso? Yep. I often make queso and give my chili a healthy shot of it right on top.

Forgot about corn chips... good stuff! Never gave queso a thought!

Traditional in my house growing up was just crushed saltines. I really don't enjoy that much anymore. I like some cheese, raw onion and maybe some sour cream on mine. Even better some Mexican crema. I also love some picked jalapenos either in it or with it.

I just made an amazing White Chicken Chili a few days ago. It was not my first try but definitely the best I have made so far. The only thing I topped it with was fresh cilantro. If I had fresh saltine crackers they would have been a good addition.

PS it has Mozzarella cheese melted into the base.

It all depends on what kind of chili it is. If it's a ground beef chili. Then I don't top it off with anything. It gets used as a topping for a hot dog. If it's a cubed beef chili then I like some freshly grated cheddar, or hot habenero cheese on top. Also can't forget that few extra drops of hot sauce.

We are almost 100% smoked chuck chili and it fits over an Idaho baked russet…..a little Mexican melting cheese (no stringy) then some caramelized red onions, chopped GO and fresh chopped herbs, sour cream is optional, as is some red beans. Oh and a side of corn bread and honey butter

Sounds good. Do you use toppings? Or just the corn bread on the side? My dad would probably put that corn bread in his bowl and put the chili on top of it like he does with beans.
Sometimes some cheese, I like my corn bread on the side but my wife likes hers in the bowl with the chili on top.
