Another go-round with the Weber kettle and Vortex. This time it's wings, thighs, and legs. The entire grill worth of chicken cost $5.21! Kingsford blue and a chunk of hickory.

Top vents completely open, bottom vent halfway open. Peaked just below 500 and then ran steady at 450-475.

30 mins in, rotating the lid 90 degrees every 15 mins.

45 mins and everything was temping 190-193. Sauced a few pieces and left them on for another 5 mins to set the sauce. Skin was bite-through. I thought about cranking up the heat for the last few mins to get a better crisp but they were already over 190.

I don't use a vortex myself , but that chicken looks spot on . I like your finished temps too . Perfect in my opinion .
Awesome view over the kettle in the first pic too .
Nice work !!

Thanks. I'm liking the Vortex so far. That's one of our ponds back there. The better half caught about 15 bluegill today. It was a beautiful day here.

I'm a Vortex user, and you did a fantastic job on those bird pieces.

Point for sure

No need to crank up the heat at the end. Just put chicken directly over the vortex for a minute or two. Keep an eye on it the whole time and be ready to flip when needed.

Nice!

I have never used the Vortex.....but I have piled my coals in the center for the same effect.

You can also put the 2 Weber charcoal baskets in the center like that for the same effect also. In fact, Weber even mentions that on their basket instructions....I do have a set of those that came with my Summit but I seldom use them since I just pile the coals how I want them.

Thanks. I have a couple of those baskets but they didn't seem to get as hot as the vortex.
