I don't find that true at all. No where in my concealed permit did I have to state that I will be carrying or even posses a gun. Yes they do know that you have a permit but they don't know what you are carrying. That is why they call it a concealed weapon permit a weapon is defined as many things not just a gun. I thought it was crazy that a knife with a blade over X amount of inches was considered a weapon. But on the other hand I would think it would be safe to say that anyone who is applying for the permit is going to be using it for a gun. But you can very easily obtain a permit and not even own a gun as well.

I'd sure hope there's more to the process than what's outlined in the article. In Texas there is required class time and having to qualify at the range. I'd also think that understanding the applicable state and Constitutional provisions might be good in helping to prevent being sued.

i know a couple people in Iowa who just had to run out and buy more guns and ammo when Obama was elected.

here in NY it is a pita to get a license for a hand gun (just to have one, not carry)
to carry you have to be law enforcement or retired law (ok ?)

i was informed last week of a LONG retired officer who brings 2 guns with him every where (one pocket one on leg). his friend was telling me his a bit off the wall and gets nervous when hes drunk in the bar talking about shooting the "disrespectful" guy next to him because he is crazy enough to do it.

In Cullman County, Alabama, you fill out a one page questionnaire consisting of Name, Address, DL # SSN, years at address, 3 character references. Other questons such as any felonies, misdemeanors ,arrests aliases, etc

The Sheriff's Office does a local background check, One week later you go back, if you passed the background check, you pay your $15.00 and get your CCW permit valid for one year from date of issue.

Renewal, you walk in to the SO, fill out a short one page form they do a quick check (28's & 29's, (Wants & Warrants)), Pay your fee and walk out with your renewal.

I love living in a community where they treat you as an adult!

I dont know about other states but in Fl the weapons permit "technically" covers only handguns, electric weapons, tear gas guns, knifes, and billies, however, as a practical matter it covers any weapon or firearm other than a machine gun.
It also makes you not criminally liable for driving through a school zone with a firearm.

If you guys live in FL or want some good dry reading check out the book Florida Firearms Law, use & ownership; by jon H Butmacher, Esq.

its actually much harder in iowa to get an open carry permit than to get a concealed carry permit. Either one requires filling out a form, presenting it to the sheriff/office in person, pay the application fee and in about two weeks you get approved or denied. My buddy just got one, his "reason" was he is a tow truck driver that picks up cars for the city police department, he was given both open and concealed carry permits due to this, when he is working its open, when off work its concealed. Some sheriffs are pretty lax on the reasoning portion of the law, saying you take a cash deposit to the bank once a month would qualify you in more than half the state.
I would personally rather have them all be open permits so we could know who was packing but for some reason a guy with a pistol alarms people at the grocery store and quicky mart

In Indiana it is a License To Carry a Handgun (LTCH) and there are no training requirements (which I support). The law does not specify any difference between open and concealed carry, and the application process is simple. Go to your local LE agency (if you live in town it is your City PD, out of town it is your country Sheriff). Fill out the form (just basic info, where you live, scars, violent history etc, no references or anything needed), have your fingerprints taken, and if you're not a convicted felon or have violent misdemeanors on your record the Sheriff will sign it. Actually he HAS to sign it unless he knows that you're not eligible because IN is a "Shall issue state", so unless the Sheriff knows you're not eligible then he must sign it. Then the app gets sent to the ISP and they do the background check to ensure that you're elegible, and they send a sheet of pink copy paper with your permit printed on it. Most people make copies of it in case they lose it, then cut the permit out of the paper and have it laminated.
Indiana has 4 year permits available for about $25
Or a lifetime permit available for $125 (only $100 if you're renewing a 4 yr permit to a lifetime)

My county Sheriff must just automatically approve everybody because every time I've gone there he wasn't even there, the secretary had a stamp made of his signature that she just stamped the form with. Before you just up and down freaking out that he is approving permits to everybody, it isn't the Sheriff that approves them, its the State Police. He is only signing the form stating that he doesn't know of any reason that you're not eligible or not a reasonable person.

IMHO, required training is BS because we shouldn't need training to excercise the rights that are acknowledged in the Bill of Rights. While it is a good idea to have training (which I have) it shouldn't be required.

What about the 3rd? The hard leaning lefties that think NO person should have the right to defend their person, property, or family with a firearm?

The facts are there...when states pass concealed carry laws crime drops. Ohio has always been open carry legal but fairly recent to concealed carry. More good guys carrying guns equals less bad guys committing crimes...

I could care less about your party affiliation...but i do care whether you support my 2nd Amendment right!

Wow, people were getting their knickers in a twist over the census thread and this one uses words like Democrats, Republican, extreme, falling down right guys, lefties.

Personally, I like Vermont's take on the issue. No permits, no restrictions. Just like the Constitution intended.

Wouldn't it be nice if the politicians would work towards making our country a better place instead of arguing over petty things?
Amazing isn't it, one party wants one thing and the other party is automatically against it, soon as the other party gets in they want the same things and suddenly the party who is out is against it.
We are one country going down the tubes because of constant terrible leadership and childish playground arguing.

In Fl you have to take a 4 hour gun safety class and demonstrate you can fire a gun. I like the class b/c why do you need a permit if you can't fire/handle a gun safe!

Let me straighten this out. We dems in Pennsylvania carry the guns in our left hand, while our bibles are carried in our right.
Seriously I think it is high time for a third party. Maybe we should call it the Reasonable party!!!!!!!

I'm guessing that was supposed to be a dig at liberals. Not ALL liberals are vegans you know. I consider myself a liberal/progressive, and obviously I'm a big fan of eating meat. And the fact that this guy would prefer to have an animal suffer rather than allow the officer to put it down makes me think this guy isn't even an animal rights activist.

As far as gun rights go, here's my take on it. Let's compare this with cars. I know that I see A LOT of idiots driving, people that make you question how they ever got a license to begin with. And these are the people that actually got a license. I wonder how bad the drivers would be who couldn't get one. What if the constitution said every citizen has a right to drive a car. Would people defend that to the bitter end too? Think of how crazy things would be if EVERYONE drove a car. So what would the harm be in proving that you can actually handle a firearm before being allowed to have one? I'm not worried about the responsible gun owners out there. I'm worried about the idiot who thinks he needs one to protect himself, who's never fired one, and decides to pull it out one day at the gas station when he thinks someone might be robbing the place. We already see people getting into fights over petty things on the road, and some of those even do escalate to shootings. Now you want to give all these hot tempered guys the right to carry a concealed firearm?

What I really don't get is the rush to go buy more guns and ammo when Obama got elected. When has Obama EVER pledged to take guns away? Maybe I missed it, someone link me to a speech or something if I have. But I was under the impression he hasn't explicitly said he intends to take guns away. People just assume that because he's a Democrat he immediately wants to take all the guns away. Let myself stand as proof that that's simply not true. I may be for better gun regulation, but never taking all guns away.

I think alot of of folks are mis led with some of this. You WONT just go fill out paper work, wait a time period and pay a fee. MOST countys are very tuff to get a permit in, you have to qualify at a range, and it it alot harder than most think it is.And there is class time involved. alot of sheriffs are loosening up on issueing, re-election will be hinge on this in some countys.

And after you get a permit, you had better not get caught in "gray" areas.
Civil laws and game laws do not cross, so your consealed permit while driveing down the road hunting is useless, ALOT of fines have been handed out on this one. Consumeing alcahol while packing, 1 drink/beer and you get caught, your done.

There will be alot more problems after this is turned over to the state, they have a history of screwing stuff up, BAD.

I agree that folks get hung up on generalized statements.. like Ron White says, "That's profilin" and profilin" is wrong!!"

Here in Oklahoma the democrat party is pretty much what most other states call republicans.. so it is different depending on what area of the country you live in.

I am all for a Reasonable Party if that is possible.

Furthermore, I always wince when I see political threads because it has a way of making folks get real tense and upset.

Keep it civil, please.. and don't carry the differences and feelings over to other threads.

We may be different in political stance but we all agree that smoked meat makes the world go 'round

Yup! It sure is nice to live in Vermont. We have a reputation of being perhaps the most constitutionally correct state in the union.

The legislature has tried to impose a few restrictions here and there and most usually the next ballot box takes care of that problem and the person behind it.

Now, grant you, there are not a lot of people in Vermont but we do enjoy excellent numbers when it come to crime statistics. Especially for crimes against people like assault, robbery and burglary.

Proof of residence and your good clean police record allows the purchase of either a long gun or a handgun. There is no law restricting concealed carry except on a school property and in an establishment serving liquor. I do believe that is a national thingy and there is some Fed funding that hinges on it for all states.

Our state government and congressional representation is mostly left leaning and for the most part they listen and pay attention to their constituency. As I said...Vermonters vote.

And, yes, like Jeff I approach forum subjects like this one carefully. We do monitor all of the site for unreasonable posts and if a forum appears to be headed in the wrong direction we try to gently correct the downhill slide. Failing that we look to other options.

So, having said my piece, I will continue to enjoy this conversation as long as it carries on in a civil and family friendly manor.

Cheers!

I find it amuzing that it's legal for me to carry a concealed firearm into local liquor stores, but the 3 inch bladed pocket knife is illegal.

Some folks are getting it figured out that the more armed citizens there are the lower the crime rates. It's a proven thing.

I dont personally care what affiliation polititions are. As long as they hear the voice of the people and not of their own agenda. We should go back to the job being one of volunteer only.
