Defuser or not?

I have about 18inches from my grate to the coal basket. Would it be okay to cook or would I need to add a Defuser. My basket is 22.5 charcoal grate and is 6inches high. Here's a pic of the Defuser I made out of a pizza pan.

It would be ok, personally I use a water pan as I don't like sour smoke. I suggest trying different methods to see what you like.
