Found out this morning my credit card got compromised. Several charges over three days. Few months back this happened to another card. As soon as I got my new card without even using it yet it got compromised so I closed the account. I have had this card for a long time. Happened right after a Walmart order. Not sure if had anything to do with it. Now for the painful tasks to get everything changed over when get new card. These guys have gotten good at this. I have had two factor authentication setup on all accounts for a while now. Also have frozen credit reports after last theft. I have a paid subscription to Aura and have not got a alert from them yet. I try to use Paypal for most things. There has got to be a better way!

That sucks Brian, and it is a big pain in the rear.

I have been hit twice over the years , last summer i was hit , and it was with a Walmart in Ontario but my alert caught it . With in 15 minutes I was talking to the phone # on the back of my card.

They said am I sure I did not purchase this in store. Kept telling them I'm in Nova Scotia.

What they did is buy a small item ( rubber gloves ) it went through. So tried larger item over $ 300.00 and that is when my Alert at $50 use goes off and beeps to my phone.
But still had to get new card and that was a shi# show with the bank.

Sorrty this happened to you Brian.

BGSDT, It happens more and more these days. It's usually not from your end but the merchants side. I do as others have said and get phone alerts for purchases over 200. My CC company is pretty good and contacts me immediately is a purchase looks suspicious. Last time it was ladies teddies/etc. purchase in Las Vegas. :)

Couple years ago my debit card got hit for over $3000. Someone spent the week in Pittsburgh and paid for very nice hotel, meals, drinks, Ubers and some shopping. I ultimately got reimbursed but once it happens you never really stop worrying about it.

Our cards are only good for our immediate area. The charge will either get denied or suspended if they are used out of the area. When we travel we have to call the CCC and tell them that we'll be in such and such an area and to allow charges for this time frame.

That is the way Visa was , last time we went away I called to tell them , and they said thanks . But we do not have to tell them anymore.
I thought that was good for a minute then thought , no I like them to know . Saves stupid charges away from my home base.

Oh well , glad I have the alerts set up so I can check as it dings on my phone and watch. ( plus keep an eye on Mona's spending ha ha .)

That sucks Brian. Couple of things I do is I get a text alert on every charge $20 and up and anything $200 and up, I get a text and have to approve it...
I would be getting calls and text 10 times a day with those alerts. Geez, take out Chinese food was $50 last night for the 2 of us.

Been there and lived it with both my dad and my wife. With my dad we think someone simply stole his debit card/checking account info.

With my wife it was after in-store purchases at Walmart, Home Depot and TJMaxx which the first two were done with skimmers at the self checkout.

These days we each have just one credit card each with both setup to receive alerts for anything out of the ordinary which sometimes gives false alerts because you left a to big a tip at a restaurant or you bought something at a store you've never bought at before but I'll take as many of those as they send me to catch at least one real one. Debit cards get used for nothing more than in bank cash withdrawals.

I carry 3 cards and have another left at home. Last month I had 2 cards I had to cancel the week before we had to fly to FL.

The problem with phone calls or texts warning me of a potential fraud charge is that it takes too long to get to me. By then the charge was denied and I paid for it using another card already.

It does amaze me how they can pick up on a fraudulent charge. A few years ago I was charging in NH, PA and NY successfully, then they caught a fraud charge in a liquor store that was only 45 minutes from me??

I do similar, but I get a text for every charge on the card. saves end of reconciling too.

I get hit at least twice a yr.
Likely due to using my card at strip clubs, dive bars, and concert venues.
Anymore, I don't worry about it, I just have the bank shutdown the card, then get a new card and change my pin code. My Credit union is great with putting the cash back into my account instantly, so it's no big deal for me.

In our case it isn't so much about when we get the notice but that there won't be a payment issued until we give the ok after we get the notice if it was legit.

This happens more and more all the time. Have luckily only gotten it once from when down in Mexico about 20 yrs ago. Everything handled smoothly from Discover.

This has happened to me a couple of times. It's a PITA to change all accounts that automatically charge to the card...electric, internet, phone, etc. What I ended up doing is getting one card specifically for those charges, and keep the card at home. I never use it to charge anything else. That way if someone does steal the info from the card I'm using everywhere else, I won't have to go through that notification process.

That is a good idea. I do keep two cards so I have a back up. I going to do that.

It has happened to me twice. You never loose any money, it is just this hassle of having to change all the auto payments, that you have scheduled. Both times for me it was over $3000. One of them was a charge for $4500, from a roofing company. I guess they took a payment for a new roof. I wonder if they ever got their money? Good luck!

Literally just now I got an email from my CC company asking if I left a large tip at a local restaurant last night which I did as the waitress is a good friend of ours.If I respond yes the payment goes through and if no it gets held.

I need to look at alert options, my bank has caught the last two suspicious charges the day they were made, and overnighted me a new card. My auto-payments even transferred over to the new card. They advised me there is an On/Off option for credit cards, but you need to log-in to your account to activate it.
