I am cooking up a couple butts this weekend for a medium sized cookout. It looks like we're going to have around 25 adults and a few children there. We're doing potluck style so we'll have heavy appetizers, some baked beans and all the fix-ins. My question is how many butts do I need to cook? I have two 7 pound butts but was thinking I may need one more. What do you think? We'll have plenty of extras on the table too so it won't be like pulled pork is all they're getting.

Thanks

I like to figure 6 - 8oz for each person. Remember that you will lose between 40 -60% of the pre-cooked weight.

He's got it right, ^^^^^^^^^but I always use 8 oz per person to be safe.

You;ll have about 6 or 7 lbs of pulled pork after cooking, that's 12-14 servings. Looks like you'll need to double your pork to cook- and that's just for the adults. An 8 oz PPB sammie is not big, just about enough to fill a standard burger bun.

Even with all the sides that isn't a lot, considering that is THE centerpiece attraction of the meal!

There is nothing worse than letting your guests down by running out of the great food they were expecting. Besides, the cook gets to keep the leftovers, so any extra is yours to freeze for lunches later.

Rivet's got it right my friend...I did 4 - 8 lb butts for july 4th, had about 30 people, and they wiped it right out. Had lots of other stuff on the table as well, but they'll all go straight for the pork.

good luck with the cookout

I would get atleast 1 more butt to have just enough but would prob get 2 more just to be sure. Cant wait to see the qview from the party.
