My neighbors all have eggs or Joe smokers...they always fire them up while I am working outside and it makes me crazy hungry.  So I finally bought an Akorn Smoker from Lowes today.  My neighbors would sometimes throw me a butt or smoke one with theirs if I happen to have one available.

I still have to put it together and season it tomorrow afternoon.

I would say that I am most clueless as to rubs and coatings.  I love that sweet, caramel like coating on the boston butts.....my neighbors will not share any of their rub or coating secrets with me.

I am excited to smoke some meat, I can't wait.

Welcome to the forums.

I myself bought my first real smoker today and can't wait to use it. I pretty much use supermarket rubs but I find them a bit salty. Been reading a lot on here and everyone is ready to help and lend a hand.

Oh and as I was told, when you cook post pics, or else you get this.....

New, if they won't share the recipes, ask them if they would make a double batch the next time and split it with you.   That would cover you for a couple of smoke sessions while you find your way into making your own rubs.

Welcome aboard! Glad you joined us. You've found a great place to learn and share ideas. Lots of friendly and knowledgeable folks here who really enjoy helping one another.  Good luck with that new smoker, and just ask when you need help and you'll get plenty.

Welcome......Hopefully you won't start modifying your smoker too much.  I started and it is adding up.  I am also driving my wife crazy with all the details I am doing and all the shopping for meats, wood chips, fireplace rope, adhesive, thermometers......Hose for Natural gas....and now a cover.....LOL

Have fun and start smoking....

Welcome to the forum! There are alot of very knowledgeable people here and plenty to read and learn! Feel free to post any and all questions....no question is to simple or "dumb". As Kathryn said...Jeff's Rub and Sauce are very good starting points in your BBQ endeavors!

Welcome!  I've been smoking for a year, and I'm still getting rubs and sauces down.  There are plenty of great recipes and resources on here to help with that.  Best advice I can give for that caramelized bark you're looking for...use turbinado sugar in your rub (otherwise known as sugar in the war).  Good stuff, and my friends rave about it when I use it on ribs or pork butt.  Like the others, I also recommend Jeff's rub and sauce as a starting point.

Kick back and have some fun.  Every smoke is like a BBQ with friends when you have so many on this forum to share.  Looking forward to seeing some of your work!
