I read a post the other day about soaking wood chips in coffee and it got me thinking. I ran a search but couldn't find anything about this. Has anyone ever tried filling the water pan with coffee? Sounds like it would taste good, especially on pork or chicken. I'm curious to see if anyone has tried it and what the results were.

I've found that what you put in the water bowl has very little effect if any on the taste of the food. I have heard of folks who use a little instant coffee in the rub.

As a coffee roaster, I would not recommend using coffee in anthing other than a rub. If you use it in a water pan or other form you could end up with a very bitter aftertase similar to what burnt coffee smells like in an overcooked pot of coffee.

Coffee basted? Why yes, yes I am... about 4 cups in me so far!

What they said.... stuff in the water pan doesn't really do squat for flavor. If you want the flavor put the grounds in your rub.

Thank you, I have a rub using coffee that I always use for pork chops and it is incredibly tasty. I was wondering about it getting a burnt aftertaste if placing it in the water pan. So thank you for saving a perfectly good cut of meat!

There is also an excellent coffee based sauce.  Do a quick search on Blackjack BBQ sauce. Be sure to use extra strong coffee when making it.

Good luck and good smoking.

On second thought, here is the recipe for Blackjack BBQ Sauce:

1 Cup strong black Coffee (the stronger the better)

1 Cup Worcestershire Sauce

1 Cup Catsup

1/2 Cup Apple Cider Vinegar

1/2 Cup Brown Sugar

3 TBS Chili Powder

2 tsp Salt

2 Cups chopped Onions

1/4 Cup minced hot Chile Peppers (or to taste.  careful with this one.)

6 cloves Garlic, minced

Combine all in a sauce pan and simmer 25 minutes. Puree in a blender or food processor. Refrigerate between uses.  Yields 5 cups.

Good luck and good smoking.

Thank you Venture. I'm going to make that and try it. Maybe even add a little Jack Daniels and liquid smoke to it.
