chips will not turn to ash

I have a MES. I used to soak the chips but after reading various posts have stopped. I do not know if I am adding to much chips or not enough. The problem is that they do not turn to ash. They look like burnt wood chips. Is this what they should look like?
 
Mine turn to dust when I am done. You need to double check and make sure your unit is heating up correctly.
 
Also make sure your chip pan is not too far from the heating element. Easy to bend it up a notch to increase the heat to the chips

That's a great idea! I never heard of doing that. I'm heading to the lanai right now.
