Using chunks or dust in the stock chip tray could burn your house down.

Many folks here use the AMAZEN tray or tube.I personally use the tube with u-bolt mod and crushed (not dust) pellets.A lot of folks have done the "mailbox" mod to their MES units.

The 6" tube w/u-bolt mod and crushed pellets will give between 5 or 6 hours of smoke. The tray will give 10 or more.

Look a A-Maze-N AMNPS 5x8, There sawdust is convenient & easy to light for shorter cooks, there pellets are more economical for longer cooks as in brisket/pork shoulders, the best & quicker way to get pellets lit without going out is with a heat gun,way better than Map gas/Propane option,I didn't like the filling the chip tube so often.

Didn't see instructions on their website on how to use. Is the tube or 5x8 simply placed next to the element or replace the tray with the A-Maze-N. Sorry for the dumb questions, never had an electric before.

I'm a big fan of the tube w/u-bolt mod and crushed pellets. It can be put in the bottom left under the water pan:
