Chimney and airflow question

Hi Smoking buddies!

I am new to this forum.

I have been smoking pigs for a while...always fun to smoke!  Now it is time for me to go ahead and build a permanent smokehouse.  I have a couple question...I have an old BBQ grill (brick) that we haven't used since we first bought that house.  It is way too small to cook regularly but it is huge grill but very tiny grilling space.  

It has a tall chimney -- I was thinking of using that old BBQ grill as a firebox.  I wonder if I add more chimney pipe from that top of the brick chimney and pipe it down into the ground and up to the center of new smokehouse.  One of my friend said it won't work because of "gravity"  smoke needs to go up.  Well...I think that smoke has to come out somewhere from old BBQ grill to the next new smoketop on new smokehouse...

My friend suggested that I cut out a new hole from that old chimney near the bottom and line it up to the center of new smokehouse.

I wonder if there is a thread that explains all about airflow and proper design to build firebox etc...

I have some pictures that I will upload to give you a better idea what I am trying to explain.

Paul, morning and welcome to the forum.... Please take a moment and stop into roll "Roll Call" call for a proper welcome from out members...

About our smoker... Start from scratch.... firebox and all.... It will save you frustration in the future if it is properly designed...   In the line above, click on FORUMS and go to the smoker build section... find something that fits your needs and ask specific questions so we can help you through the engineering/build process.......  Dave
