Central Virginia
The wife and I are taking a road trip to Charleston, SC. She's always wanted to go there and I never got much time to play when I was there installing a glass floor support for a scale model of the city in the visitors center.

I'm a big food and drink tourist. We love wineries, breweries, all kinds of food, etc. We are a bit spoiled here in Central VA with all of that, but love to check out stuff when traveling.

I even look for restaurants featured on food shows I love like Diners Drive In's and Dives and go see of they are as awesome as they were on the show. Mixed results, but it's fun to go sit and eat in those places you saw on TV.

Any suggestions on what to do and where to go in Charleston is very much appreciated. Beaches, BBQ, brew, history...I'll take anything you got.

Thanks!

Ken

Charleston is our very best favorite place to go. It is only 3 hours away. Charleston Crab House is an excellent seafood place. It is downtown, next to the Market. A great southern meat and 3 is at Jestine's on Meeting Street about 4 blocks north of the Market. Folly Beach is about 20 minutes south of Charleston and is a wonderful beach without much crowding. Locklears is a seafood restaurant at the beginning of the pier in Folly Beach. The she crab soup is a killer. There are umbrellas and chairs available for $30 a day.

Good luck, give it a try, it's a wonderful place to vacation. If you need a couple of hotel recommendations, PM me and I will be happy to help anyway I can. Joe

The Cru Cafe is a great restaurant in charleston. I had one of the best meals of my life there. It's kind of like modernized southern cooking. Also, the Hominy Grill which was on Man Vs Food is also great for breakfast. Try the big nasty!

Joe,

Thanks a lot. I may PM you. I have to get the hotel info we reserved, it's on the peninsula but I can't remember what DW chose. We're not going for another month, so I have a little time yet. (we may have to cancel as well)

Work,

I think I saw that episode! The wife and I would have to share any of the meals on that program...and still leave some behind. I'm a food show junkie and DW is right behind me on that. She's a little more addicted to House Hunters type stuff but digs the food shows too.

So...folks...within a few hours of my original post asking for the community's input, my wife lost her job. It's going to be a big financial hit but we'll figure it out. I'm going to try to keep this road trip on the schedule, we've never even had a honeymoon since we married a few years ago after living together for 15 years. I really want to take her to Charleston, she deserves it.

So please keep the info coming, I really appreciate it. Suggestions from people who have done it is always the best.

Cheers!

Hey!

Charleston is a fun place to visit. Carry lots of cash for those sweet grass baskets at the market and the four corners downtown. If your wife is like mine, she will want one of each; and they have gotten pretty expensive compared to what they sold for in the '50s and '60s.

Don't forget to indulge in boiled peanuts.

We live about 20 minutes out. Anymore we pretty much only go downtown when we have out of town guests or special occasions so most of our fav's are a bit pricey. Magnolia's, High Cotton,  82 Queen. Poogan's Porch is pretty good. Southend Brewery for craft beers. Like to walk around Rainbow Row, The Battery, Waterfront Park, The Market. Head over the Ravenel bridge to Shem Creek (Mt. Pleasant) to see the Shrimp Boats. Also on Shem Creek there's Red's Ice House Bar, fun bar on the water, OK food. The Water's Edge is good too. The Wreck over there is a little hole in the wall by the shrimp boats but has great fried seafood at a reasonable price. It's not fancy (picnic tables, wood floors etc). Tour the USS Yorktown at Patriots Point, take a trip out to Fort Sumter. The Aquarium is OK but over priced in my opinion. Lots of joints to grab a drink or grub as you walk around downtown for sure. The roof top bar at Vendue Inn is fun too....

Have fun!

Sure! One other is the Pavillion Bar - it's a roof top bar as well. Great views of the river and bridge. We'll go through the hotel lobby and go up top for a couple of Cooper River Margarita's and press on.....

Thanks again everyone. We have no real local knowledge yet. DW has some relatives in the area we will also ask. We wont impose to stay with them though...I'm not much for staying with family I don't really know that well though...I'm anti social that way I guess! I just prefer to be in "control" of my lodging and I'm an old road warrior, very comfortable in hotels. The budget may change my attitude though! Who knows, maybe they have an awesome place!
