Charcoal Advice ???

Hey everyone hope you're all doing well. 

I live just outside of Boston MA and I'm looking to try some different charcoals. I only have a year of smoking under my belt and the only brand of lump I'm able to find is Cowboy. Since this is all I've used it's all I know but I have seen some pretty poor reviews of the heat it generates & length of burn time. Would anyone have suggestions on particular brand and a local or place to get it?

I use kingsford for mine at home. No complaints for me on that one. I add the chunks of the wood I want the smoke flavor for.....

WalMart carries Royal Oak lump, better than Cowboy IMHO.

I looked at your "not so mini smoke house" awesome. Is the inside paneled with something or just exposed wood? What have you smoked in it? Did you install some kind of plate above your heat source?

I've more questions lol but this is a start.

i've tried a bunch now and i like kingsford comp. but if i cant find that i'll use standard kingsford blue. royal oak burns too fast. stubbs leaves a ton of ash. wicked good charcoal is good but pricey and is about the same as kingsford comp.

Just exposed wood.
Yes I have a deflector plate above the heat source.
So far some ribs and PP. both came out very well. I will be tweaking my process a bit to get better results. I miss the charcoal and wood mix.......

So after the help here, what did you come up with? Where I am in MN I have a hard time finding Kingsford Comp. Every other kind is here though.

I live in Springfield, MA and Cowboy seems to be the popular pick out here too. You will always use more lump vs briquettes and the heat is generally the same with any type of lump. It's all made of the same stuff.
