Pesticide In Salsa Culprit Of Mi Ranchito Sickness

Owner Says Someone Out To Hurt His Customers

UPDATED: 8:47 am CDT October 1, 2009

LENEXA, Kan. -- The source of mass sickness at a Lenexa Mexican restaurant has been found to be a pesticide in the salsa.

The owners at Mi Ranchito originally claimed the sickness came from a reaction from carbonated water and copper pipes. However, KCTV5's sources and the owners confirm that pesticide is to blame for the sickness that sent at least 15 people to the hospital.

The owners said police have told victims from the incidents in August the cause of the sickness.

The owner said someone is out to hurt his business.

Kansas Department of Agriculture officials cleared Mi Ranchito to reopen last week.

State officials are still investigating the incident, but no charges have been filed.

It happened twice in a two week period, the first time 5 people were taken to the hospital and the second time 20 people were taken to the hospital, both times by ambulances from the restaurant...

The state didn't close them the first time but did the second...

Have they found anyone who did this or was the owner to blame and trying to hide the fact.

They aren't saying, It has been turned over to the Feds because of Food Tampering...

LENEXA, Kan. -- The U.S. Attorney's office

is now investigating the poisoning of salsa at Mi Ranchito Mexican restaurant in Lenexa.

Twice in August, large numbers of diners at the restaurant got sick and had to be transported to area hospitals, forcing the restaurant to be closed by Kansas officials for nearly a month.

This week, those who got sick were informed by police that the reason they got sick was because of a pesticide put into the salsa at the restaurant.

U.S. Attorney's officials said they have no comment on the case. State and local officials have been investigating the case.

The Kansas Department of Agriculture

had allowed Mi Ranchito to reopen last week after completing a series of health instruction courses and passing inspections.

Food tampering could lead to federal charges. It's unclear if any terrorism charges could be filed because of the use of chemicals.
