cast iron in gas materbuilt smoker were do you put ?

have a gas 30 double door wood pan is on top of burner do I put cast iron pan on top of chip pan or on top of burner hot smoking

I have the dual door MPS with the chip tray that catches the chips on fire. I cut the handle off my 10" cast iron pan and put it right on the chip tray that came with the smoker. It doesn't smoke them if the knob is the entire way down I found out but if the knob is vertical, just off low it works great. I have a pork shoulder in it right now.
