Hey all,

I'm smoking some candied salmon in a masterchef electric smoker and the flys and wasps are going nuts. I'm worried about them flying into the vent. Anybody got any tips for keeping the bugs away from the meat that doesn't involve me standing here shooting them away? Thanks in advance.

Full disclosure here: I am not an expert on bugs or their behaviors and abilities, BUT, wouldn't the draw from the vent prevent bugs from "flying" in there? Regardless, a piece of screen or strainer should keep the "buggers" out.

Most of them were staying out. But there were so many they knocked each other in. I've never seen so many in my backyard before. Strainer seems to be doing the trick.

Hurry up and eat it. Screen is a great idea just don't get to small of mesh as this could inter fear with air flow.

It’s crazy when I cold smoke my bacon during the day, the flies hover around my smoker like they know there is raw meat nearby. But they never dare enter the cooking areas as the smoke constantly flows.

No stink bugs luckily! Just a bunch of flys and a couple hungry wasps when I went to put the salmon in.

Just gonna put this out there ,,, the first time I saw it was on vacation on the gulf coast . Outdoor seating at a restaurant . Plastic bags full of water with a few shiny pennies in the bag . Hang the bag where the sun hits it . I now do this at home .
I used to have flies all over by the smoker . Have not noticed any in a long time , until a few days ago . Flies everywhere . I completely forgot about the bag . Been out there ,,, I bet 3 years . When I saw this post , made me think . Went outside and the penny bag was gone . Made up a new one . We will see what happens .

Hahaha.... found a bug JUST like that in my office last night...

I wasn't sure, but took no chances and used a paper to remove it to the outdoors.

Looks like my instincts were right.... identical to the Bear's clan!

That year (2010) was really bad here with the Stink Bugs. Not so bad here this year.
Now we're quarantined with the "Lanternfly", which looks like a pretty moth, but is supposed to be very destructive!!
Here's what they look like:

Most of those seem to be concentrated east of us so far. Saw 1 here last year.

They get here late in Summer or early Fall---Just starting to see them here again.
LOL---The other day Mrs Bear was out on the Deck with a Fly swatter.
I asked her "Watcha Doin'?" She said she's killing Lanternflies.
I said "Oh, OK---Another 30,000,000 and you'll have a good start !!"
LOL---She cracks me up!!

Saw some small ones a couple weeks ago east of here. Them little suckers are fast.

LOL---Other than how pretty they are, the first thing we noticed was how "Quick" they are.
If you want to step on one, your foot has to move really fast, or they'll move just before your foot gets there!!!
I think that's why Mrs Bear came in to get the fly swatter!!!
I told her After she kills all the ones out back, I saw some out front too. LOL
