My wife wants a Big Green Egg.

So far (I mostly do smoking on a Old Smokey) I have been very pleased with my electric smoker.

What has been your experience (if any) with this costly piece of equipment?

Your help will be much appreciated, especially BEFORE Mother's day.

There is no doubt that the BGE is a great smoker but yes it is very spendy. I borrowed my buddies last summer and used it a lot and loved it. I was going to buy one this summer but I just couldn't justify spening the money plus I wanted something more mobile for our family BBQ cook off this summer. Don't get me wrong you can take the egg with you but you better have help loading and unloading it and if you drop it you are in for a world of hurting if it cracks and breaks. Rather than spend the money on a Egg I built a UDS and I am VERY happy with it. I can actually fit more meat and smoke longer on my UDS than I could on my buddies Medium Egg. And they are about the same amount of work as far as starting the fire and tending it for a constant temp. Don't get me wrong I am not trying to talk you out of an Egg but just trying to show you that there are other options as well especiall if money is an issue.

Buy it.

You'll find yourself loving the mothers day gift you got her.

I bought one for my parents years ago and they are the cats meow.

Get her a WSM with all of the fans on this site they can't be too wrong. If you like electric get a MES from sams club it is awesome both will give you great food and save you tons of change.

Well it's pretty much settled then...right?

Not an owner...two time user ~~~ They work...they cook ~~ They're heavy...They will crack ~~ They have an almost cult like following (Check out Egghead dot com, dot org, or something) ~~ Somewhat over hyped and over priced IMO ~~ Another option is a Primo...they're oval. They may offer a better price per square inch of cooking surface...It's been a while since I did the math...Made in the USA? I think so! HTH

Enjoy!

My mom's boyfriend has one and it is a nice unit. Theyre very versatile in the sense of they can go low and slow or you can crank them up and do some serious searing. They also have a pizza stone which I would love to try. That will be one of the options I make on some of my upcoming smokers.

I was over there last night and we had chicken. While we were talking, he said his direct buy membership allows him to get a ceramic cooked for half the price. He said it may of been the other brand (can't remember now) but it's significantly cheap. Take a look at that and see if you can find someone who has the membership. Maybe someone on here will chime in.

The BGE is a wonderful grill, smoker & oven. They crack, you're done. Is there a specific reason why your wife wants the BGE? You could save the money by making another type of oval purchase. (I am not going to start selling you on the idea of the WSM, even though they are effectively, by far, a superior smoker that can hold it's own.) But whatever makes wifey happy, right? I hope your dilemma is resolved soon.

I would stop into Roll Call if you will. But I would buy the green egg for the wife and learn how to smoke on it. After all it's not that hard to do. Then you will both be smoking together and I couple thats smokes together stays together or something like that. Oh yea:

If my wife wanted a BGE as a mother's day gift I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

If you don't mind dealing with wood and charcoal they are great. Very versatile. You can do all kinds of things on it. You can get that sucker super hot so it can cook steaks, pizza and other items like a professional kitchen can produce. You can use it as a tandoor if you get a itch for Indian chicken tikka masala or other Indian favorites. Grilled lamb on skewers...Go for it.

Here is an easy solution to your dilemma, you say you are happy with your Old Smokey, so, buy a Large Ostrich Egg and dye it GREEN, give her that and keep the Old Smokey...
