Beef Cost is Unreal!

This Sunday top/bottom rounds will go on sale for 3.99/lb at Market Basket so I'll be stocking up. And this week the st.louis ribs were on sale for $2.99 so grabbed another rack to add to the pile.

And in an aside chix and 1 1/4 lobsters are retailing in several places at $7.99/lb so that means I'll be taking a trip out to the point and loading up at $3.99/lb, yay me.

Brisket at Costco yesterday was $5.99 . I didn't see anybeef primals or sub primals . They had 4 packs of strip and rib steaks , and smaller rib and strip roasts . $18.99 a pound . So you're paying at least a couple bucks a pound for the knife work on top of an already high price .
My Son was looking for beef plate ribs . Crazy . Package price was $170.00 for 2 - 4 bone sections . Not much meat on them either .
We left with pasta sauce and a jar of Kinders garlic salt .

GFS has 81/19 ground beef on sale for $4.19 . 10 lb. chub . Last time I bought 40 lbs and broke it onto 1.5 lb. packs .
I also buy the unsliced deli meats . They average around $5.50 a pound .
Its getting real hard to pay the price for beef. Steaks for $19.lb and Costco is not right. Ground here was on sale for $9. I stocked up a few months ago when it was more like $6

I made a trip to Costco today. Their choice Tri-tip was $13.99 lb! Glad I still have a small one in the freezer.
Choice brisket, $6.49 lb, Prime $6.99. They only had skin-on pork belly, for $3.99 lb.
Time to go freezer diving!
Some friends told me their Loaded Baked Potato Salad is good, so I picked up one of those.
If you haven't opened it yet, their Loaded Baked Potato Salad is awesome!

Illinois Beef Plant Closes Without Warning; Cattle Haulers Now Face 160 to 400 Mile Trips to Nearest Processors, Buyer Had No Idea Closure Was Coming

JOSLIN, ILLINOIS — Tyson Foods shut down its Joslin, Illinois beef processing plant without notice on August 13, blindsiding cattle producers who had Tyson buyers looking at their livestock just days before the announcement and leaving haulers in the region facing drives of 160 to 400 miles to reach the nearest remaining processing facilities.

The Joslin plant employed approximately 2,500 to 2,700 workers and had a daily harvest capacity of 3,000 head, with cattle sourced primarily from Illinois and Iowa. Harvest operations ended August 13 and processing jobs ended August 14. Tyson said it will continue compensation for 60 days and encourage affected workers to apply at other facilities.

For cattle producers and the haulers who serve them, the sudden closure creates an immediate logistical and financial problem. The nearest alternatives are now Aurora Packing Company in North Aurora at 160 miles, Iowa Premium in Tama, Iowa at 160 miles in the opposite direction, JBS in Michigan at 280 miles, and the nearest remaining Tyson plant in Dakota City, Nebraska at 400 miles. Those distances represent a dramatic increase in hauling costs at a time when beef cattle producers are already squeezed by record high cattle prices and falling processor margins.

Al Lyman, who feeds out 2,000 head per year just 22 miles from the Joslin plant, had a Tyson buyer visit his operation on Tuesday. The buyer had no idea the closure was coming. "He wasn't even aware then. He said we'd have a bid later in the week," Lyman said.

Industry leaders were stunned not just by the closure but by how it was handled. Josh St. Peters, executive vice president of the Illinois Beef Association, said every other plant closure of this scale came with at least two months notice. "Tyson's announcement in Nebraska came with a two-month notice period, which gave producers time to sort pens and shift plans and do something different. This leaves a pretty hard pill to swallow," he said.

Tyson framed the move as a restructuring, saying it will anchor its beef business around three remaining facilities in Dakota City, Nebraska; Holcomb, Kansas; and Amarillo, Texas. The company also announced it is closing a case-ready facility in Eagle Mountain, Utah and pursuing the sale of its Pasco, Washington plant.

The closures come as U.S. cattle supplies have dropped to a 75-year low following prolonged drought and restrictions on Mexican cattle imports tied to New World Screwworm concerns. Tyson forecast an adjusted operating loss of $500 million to $650 million in its beef business for fiscal 2026. The average retail price of ground beef hit a record $8.65 per pound in June.

"Here on Agriculture Day at the Illinois State Fairgrounds, we know the farm economy has been in a rough spot across commodities, but beef has been the bright spot that's carried a lot of Illinois farm families through," St. Peters said. "This announcement feels like a kick in the teeth."

Don't take my post as political- but the U.S. Gov. just announced a temporary removal of tariffs on imported ground beef. This should lower ground beef prices by 25% or so at the grocery stores....

So the US can't grind their own beef?
Just import the hunks and we'll do the rest.

I can see a lot of people getting sick over this.

Key word in that sentence ...
I am very skeptical as well. I bet the price stays the same to the consumer and the corporate grocery stores increase profits.

Prices almost never go back down. Airlines already said they would keep the higher rates. Chevron and Exxon just reported record profits while we are paying record gas prices. UGH!

The government helping? Yeah, I'll believe it when I see it.

Not sure about other states, but Nebraska got hit hard this year! Talking to some farmers out there, they've hardly had any rains, had tons of wildfires that burned off alot of their grass, and now are cutting their cornfield down and baling them... as theres not any ears on them.

Is the price of beef high? Sure is! But I sure wouldn't go complaining about it to a farmer that's going through that! Don't imagine they'll have any sympathy for ya.

Yes, transportation costs were factored in when ranchers planned this years cattle herds. A last minute change to find and ship cattle to a processor can kill the expected profits.

My Friend just bought a 1/2 beef for $1,800. Final cost was $9.37 per pound.

The US has a shortage of ground beef because we lack beef trim for grinding of all the options (80/20 or 90/10 for instance). I don't think our processors will import ground beef, rather they import beef trim used to blend with their trim to produce ground beef. I know local ranchers are not happy.

Record profits yes, but a chunk of those profits are passed on to shareholders.

Nebraska has some water rights that are older than Wyoming's rights, so we have to regulate irrigation water for them and our local farmers. Four reservoirs on the North Platte river are extremely low. The hot weather increases evaporation, and the Game & Fish department is recommending not releasing trout when water temp reaches 70°.

My biggest bitch is... As soon as the price per barrel of oil goes up so do the gas prices... IMMEDIATLY .. Meaning they start cherging higher prices for the gas that they already have in the tanks that they bought at cheaper prices... They haavn't bought any of the higher priced finish product (gas) at the new price of a barrell of oil yet...

I understand company's are in business to make money... All deserve a profit... BUT... MILLIONS PER QUARTER... BILLIONS PER YEAR ... I would think they would make more profit at cheaper prices as more people would or even could buy more without having to be conservative...

I don't know just my thinking...

One of the first things one of my law professors told us was, "What's right and what's wrong, sometimes have little to do with what is legal." This was a Civil Law class.

For any business, but it's most evident for a retail business where the cost changes rapidly and the product turns over quickly like gasoline, the 'cost' for any given transaction is the replacement cost of that product, not the initial purchase cost.

The initial purchase cost is already spent. Your revenue (sales price) has to cover the replacement cost of the gasoline you're going to order tomorrow, plus some overhead, if you're lucky.

SORRY? I DISAGREE!?
We have a major Gas /Connivence chain that has monopolized the gas here.
They will lower their gas price to shut down the local Comp.
Hoping when you fill yur car up, will pay 10% + for the Conv. goods!
What bothers me is the gas comes off the same truck, yet we see a 10c + increase in the same town ,within 5 miles?
Not to mention they have their own refinery !
Tell me why there is such a Rapid change in prices !?
when the Gas prices Rise the entire region is all flat @ the same price !
They are targeting areas of high demand with no Comp, and SCREWING the tourist industry !
Its an internal profit game @ retail level !
There is NO Viable explanation.

They are doing it to make money... they don't care how.
But this thread is about the price of beef, not gas.
And keep it civil, without politics please.

Before the beef prices started to tick up one market had a Friday senior special on burger: 1.5 lb packages for $5. Their next move was to label 1 lb packages with the $5 tag. Then... they stopped the special all together. Last Friday their ground beef was $9 something per lb.
