Hi,
I'll be starting my first bacon project tomorrow and was wondering if someone out there can recommend a slicer. Nothing too expensive but decent quality that will last.
I'm sure there are different features and such. Again I am new at this so I could use all the help I can get.
I have not priced anything wet so I have no idea what it will cost me. I guess I should do some homework. In the meen time what are your recommendations?

The problem with the smaller cheaper slicers is you have to cut the slab of bacon in half.. Then you get short slices of bacon after slicing... Search Craigslist/Fakebook Marketplace/and any other classified ads looking for a commercial type slicer ( i.e. Hobart) ... They will do a much better job than the smaller ones...
 
That’s a loaded question. About any lower end slicer will slice bacon but you will have to cut the piece down to 5” or so, not a huge deal but kind of a pain. The lower end slicers are also direct motor driven with plastic gears. You have to go slow and just let it slice, if you force feed it you will eventually strip the gears. These run from 100 to 300 bucks and all pretty much the same construction and same carriage length.

You can step up to a decent 10” slicer, belt driven like the LEM big bite which is belt driven but still has a 7” carriage and is around 40# and costs 4-500 bucks.

The used commercial slicers like Hobart are the cats meow but you will likely still spend 400 plus and they are even more heavy and need a dedicated space or roll away cart.

So you see it’s a complicated subject. I personally run the LEM 10” big bite but would rather a slicer with a more tilted carriage. But it works good and I can slice 10” bellies on it going a little freestyle.
 
Keith is right on the commercial slicers, they are a much better choice if you can find a used one, but we had a 12” slicer & it was just too heavy to move around ( for us ). So we have a Chef’s Choice 645. We bought a smooth blade & sharpening stones for it also. It works for everything we need a slicer for And is very portable. It will easily cut 8” bacon, and honestly anything much longer than that won’t fit in a pan anyway. Chef’s Choice has several models & all are very good.

I'VE USED A 10" COMMERCIAL GRADE SLICER FROM CABELAS FOR AROUND 20 YEARS. WORKS JUST FINE, NEVER A PROBLEM, THEY COME WITH A SHARPENING ATTACHMENT. SEEMS TO BE HEAVIER THAN IT USED TO BE, NOW I KEEP IT STORED ON A ROLLING TABLE IN KITCHEN. RAY

This is the one I have. Don't recall paying nearly this much for it though. Works great on everything I have tried to slice with it. Got this when a friends $300 slicer took a dump after less than a year of use. I figured I won't have to buy a new slicer for the rest of my life with this one.

I have an older Berkle. To tell you the truth I haven't used that thing in years. Semi freeze it and use a good sharp knife. I only make small batches now Clean up is much much easier with a knife.

By chance, since you don't use it would you be up to selling it? Truthfully, I've tried the knife thing doing jerky, it came out semi okay. Bacon on the other hand i would like a little more consistency.

With a good knife and a ton of patience, you can cut it thin enough to see through with a knife.
 
Never had my hands on one but it looks very similar to my LEM big 10”. If so you will be happy especially at the price point to you. Not sure about the Teflon coated blade though.
