Lighting strike took out one channel of bedroom AVR and took out a very expensive AVR in living room. I had those protectors from Dish Network. I put an old AVR in to get by and looking for a new one now. Glad it did not get my new TV! I had to unplug and re-plug several things. I have to step up my surge protects. I looking at a ESP Next Gen Surge Protector/Noise Filter/Power Monitor (Model# XG-PCS-15D) 120 Volt, 15 Amp but know nothing about these things.

A surge protector with a joule rating of 1000 or higher is recommended, especially for sensitive and costly equipment like home theater systems.

CNET rated best
Thats what I read as well.

We just got a new garage door and opener and the installer recommended a surge protector for it as these "new ones" have more sensitive electronics. Bought this from HD.

All our TVs and suck are on them too. I also read they dont last forever, AI says 3-5 years...but that seems kinda short to me.

I found a new open box for this one. I will plug my strip into it but still need at least another one. I guess surge protector's only have a 5 year life time.

WOA! that looks pretty serious and expensive. Just checking, do you really need something like that? I just use the power strips with surge projection built in. the most I ever spent was about 20-30 bucks. Never had any electronics get fried with those.

Well, a strike can fry a multitude of plugged in equipment including micros, and other appliances. Get them each plugged into an incorrectly spec'd protector and the equipment replacement price tag will jump way into the 4 figure range. Go the inexpensive route if that's your choice. For me the choice was easy.

This is not my first or second time this happening. Over the years have lost several things. I have always used those surge protects but stuff still gets fried. We get a lot of bad storms around here.

Should have provided more detail above.
Having one that trips in less than 1 nanosecond is key.
The ones you've had, most likely did not.
If it trips in 10 nanoseconds, that spike has gone about 10' past the surge protector before it trips.
It is hard finding any details about one that trips in less than 1 nanoseconds.
Need to contact manufacturer in most cases.

Heads up BrianGSDTexoma BrianGSDTexoma good chance there's a fuse in the AVR! Give me model and make and I will look for service manual.
Dont think its a fuse. Started out kept making my subs thump for every little think you do. Then the video started blanking off. I tried to plug into another circuit in house then the video went completely out. Its a Pioneer vsx-lx505

Wow the whole house stuff has come down. Last time I looked it was "I will roll the dice" price. I am pretty knowledgeable with electric and should be a REALLY simple job for a licensed guy. Does not scare me at all. I see a bunch of YT vids on the logic and theory. It is now required in NEC.

Yeah gonna agree with on that. Wonky is not cool.
