I went to Sam's tonight and everything was fine. When I came out the van started but was just sputtering. I had gas but thought maybe if I put some in it might do something if there was water or something. I put a few gallons in and went to start it. All it would do is crank over, not even sputter. After wearing the battery down some I called my local shop and he said maybe sitting a while would do it. Also to thump on the tank while cranking it. So I called Carol to come get me and waited. When she got there we cranked again, nada. By now the battery was pretty low. I had an old cane in the van with a big brass ball for a handle. I told Carol to crank it and got on the ground and pounded the crap out of the tank. About the 8th thump, WHAM she started right up and purred like a kitten all the way home. I talked to Randy afterwords and he said the pump probably has a flat spot on the motor shaft and sometimes a good thump will make it start again. He said it may need replacing at a later date if that was the problem, though it may also have been a stuck relay. In any event he will do some research tomorrow and look at the history of my van and see the most common causes and call me.
I had already called the insurance about towing and found that I was only covered for $50.00.
So the first thing I thought of on the way home was another payback. Since it was only his advice and no labor cost I thought about making him and his wife a nice big salami.
What do you think? He could have had me just bring in in or get it towed.
