Hello All,

I'm new to the forum. I got my first offset smoker about a year ago. It was a cheap one that I got as a birthday present(So I'm not complaining). But it obviously needed some mods. After reading a lot of threads on here, I went to work. I have set in Baffles, extended the chimney to grate level, and built a charcoal basket(that was the biggest improvement). But my firebox does not have a proper ash drain built in and its always a pain when I get too much ash in a long smoke. The problem is that the side door opening has a lip so I can't just sweep out the ash. To try to fix this I used some of the leftover aluminum flashing that I used to extend the chimney to create a catch tray that sits under the charcoal basket and fitted it over the lip. I did a burn off and clean up of the ash was so much easier. I just want to get some opinions if using the aluminum flashing is safe to use before I cook any meat with this set up. Thank you in advance for your thoughts.

Most of my pots & pans are made out of aluminum.
Aluminum is fine, galvanized steel would not be OK in the firebox.

They make aluminum grills. So you should be ok.
