I bought an Acurite therm and probe. Error after 1 use..bought another 1..same result. Contacted Acurite recieved 2 free.. used 1 same error. Probe cord real cheap and has to be the problem cause I hooked a new probe to an old unit. Worked fine. Please direct me to a good quality meat therm and probe. Thanks

Maverick is a very popular model on here.

I have had a couple of them for years without any problems.

You just have to be careful when you clean the probes, not to get any water at the connection where the probe meets the wire.

Yep....exactly what Al said. I ran the Accurite gamut also and every one was an epic failure. Finally pulled the trigger and got 2 Maverick units.....and have not looked back. I've had mine for several years and they still work perfectly. I had to replace the probes not long ago because they (like any other) will wear out over time. The probes are not expensive and the service I've gotten from A-Maze-N (did I spell that correctly??) has always been first rate. They are one of our sponsors so hopefully recommending them is within protocol. The Maverick unit is a bit more expensive than the Accurite but FAR more reliable.

Like Al said, be careful when washing...but I love my Mavericks!!

I have an older Maverick & a few Polders no problems with either of them

The best way I have found to clean the probes without taking the chance of water damage is this: I use a small piece of 0000 (very fine) steel wool to clean the food and soot from probes and cables. Be gentle when running the steel wool down the cables though so as not to pull them out of the probe. Then I use lens cleaning wipes for glasses to sanitize the food probe. Those are readily available and super-cheap. Since they are treated with denatured alcohol they will completely sterilize. The alcohol evaporates very quickly leaving no residue that will taint the flavor of the meat when re-inserted on the next cook. Been doing it this way for several years and it's been fool-proof.

Hope this helps,

Robert

My damage was not from washing. I would get thru 1 cook and it would error saying check probe. I feel the probe cord is far to weak and would kink and break
