I bought a cheap Bosch slicer at an auction for $7 - it's worked fine for me because I don't own a deli counter and only use it occasionally - been working for 4 years now (it's over at a friends house right now making venison jerky)

This post reminds me of so many instances - Like fishing with a guy who bragged about his $400 reel and $500 rod and looked at my gear with disdain - I out fished him 3 to 1.

Or the guy who had a $1600 set of golf clubs and wondered why I was still using my "yr. old discounted set" - I beat him by 12 strokes and took ALL his money.

I use a $100 Kenmore GOSM version and I turn out some really good "Q" - Lesson is don't get caught up or upset with what others have or say (especially the elitists who think their equipment, methods, etc is the only way)
This is a great site with so many knowledgeable and friendly people - don't let one or two keep you away from such a great forum.

Glad I have not been around the past month or so or I would really be paranoid since I just might fit the description.

I knew I should have not bought the Hobart.

Anyhow, like others have mentioned this is a big place with many different views and philosophies..........you have the option to put people on your ignore list..........trust me, it works great.

I have a cheapy Krups slicer I bought about 6 years ago. Its a jerky making, roast slicing fool.

Not the fastest but gets the job done.

I guess I'm lucky then cause I have two slicers and wasn't on purpose either It was the wife know I wanted on and we agreed to buy one so she was on E-bay and so was I. She bid on one and not knowing I was bidding on another so After tha slocer I was bidding on ended and I won it I went to check My Ebay and saw another slicer was won and already paid for. I freaked cause I won a slicer and it wasnt the one that I was bidding on so I contacted the seller and they said that they didnt know what I was talking about and to get ahold of E-bay that someone has broken into my account and started buying stuff. Well I was worring about it and later that night when the wife got home I told her of the events of e-bay and she lowered her head and said it was me and she was mad because the slicer I won and bought was 1/2 the price of the one she won and bought. So we have 2 slicers. neither are really great but one is older then me and I have dirt named after me. But it was and works good enough for me. I'm STOKED with my slicer. As far as your having people try top give advice without knowing what they are doing or talking down to people here I haven't seen any of that here. Now I don't go to any other smoking websites ( I'm very loyal) so I dont know how things are there but I have seen clicks on other chats in the way back past but never in here the people here have been really nice and to me very helpful. So I hope that everything that you have problems with get fix soon for you. So you can come in here with the joy that I get from the folks here.

I have the best of both worlds i don't own a slicer or grinder but i have use of industrial quality ones.. my wife works at a commisarry about 50 yards from the house and they are always slicing meat for sammies for in vending machines..they also have a giant grinder that i have put 5# chunks of meat into and it didn't even grunt, there is also a meat bandsaw and all kinds of freezers and fridge units plus i pretty much have run of the place since my wifes aunt is the BOSS and i do a lot of building maintainance for them

Well I can say I've used the lower priced units, never met my expectations. Ran em like they said to an killed the last one in 5 minutes. Wanted a smaller one to do the little jobs.

My commercial unit is real old, but does an excellent job. They can be had fer a resonable price if ya shop around.

Now if a small unit works fer yer needs thats great, I've never downplayed somebody cause it does the job fer them. But you have ta have yer expectations an needs in mind when ya buy a slicer.

No snobbery involved, simply a commerial unit feels my needs.

It isn't the slicer that is bothering me. It is a $50 slicer and is a great entry point for someone like me who is unsure of their own commitment. But, that isn't the point. I am not bothered by the slicer and am using that to illustrate a point. I am bothered to not see some familiar faces who disappeared after some of the same mentality appeared in thread they had posted about some neat things they tried and experienced. It bugs me.

I put it on my UDS and held it around 225* until it hit an internal temp of 140*. Then foiled and let it rest for a couple hours before putting in the fridge overnight for slicing later. My first two attempts I used hickory chunks with lump charcoal and really liked it but this time I used oak chunks with lump charcoal and for me it was the perfect flavor. The rub is just a mixture of sea salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and a bit of cayenne.

Go with what works for Ya....Snobs will be Snobs....

Don't Let Anyone tell You NOT to Post....

I would tell you that there are many thoughts on smokers and the " Best Way to Smoke".....
The best wood to use....
Chips...Chunks....Stickburners...
Many Have Vast experence and
Some are new and want to Learn
Many just smoke the way they have always smoked.....
We all started as Newbies
Try not to Let Tudes get in the way....Im just here to Learn and Help....With what I know.... Wished I had a slicer but ,,,,,I got a friend and use his.....My 2 cents.

Well I know not everbody on here always cares fer me, what I say er do, but, I stick around to help them folks that wan't the help. Is this the only forum I visit? No, there are several others.

I post what I do an how I do it, is it the only way to do it? Nope, there are so many different ways, I live a more traditional life, follow the old ways, that I like to share with folks who are interested in it, that's why I'm here. It may not be the way you wan't to do it, but ya never know, ya just might pick up somthin ya can use. I won't let a few bad apples spoil it. You shouldn't either. There is lots to learn an share here, sometimes ya have to take the good with the bad. It's a choice, some have decided to leave the site, thats a loss fer them an the folks here who could share in there experience.

Yes, from time ta time my feathers get ruffled, I just go visit another site er interest an let it pass. I've decided long ago to quit lettin other people make my decisions.

I wish some a the old friends would reconsider an join in a good smoke, we all can enjoy this fine craft together.

Stick round, there are always bumps in the road, but the distination is sure worth it!

I don't care if he is a hound,
Ya better quit kickin my dog around.

There's only one slicer that's worth anything...
a safe one.
As long as that's met, all the rest is relative.

I agree. Ya I got an expensive smoker only cause I sold some property when I moved and had the jack at the time. My slicer was 67.00 and she works well for my purposes. If yours does what ya need it to then to hell with the neg comments. To tell ya the truth I know I could turn out great Q with some cinder blocks and a grate or two like dad did. Your end result is all that matters and for those that say otherwise ignore them. Sometimes ya get what ya pay for and other times ya pay for what ya get. My dad use to tell me when I was young the brand doesnt make the man.

Glad the slicer is working out well for you. I have the same one and had to replace some of the plastic gears inside.... so far so good. I'm also shopping for a great deal on a more commercial grade one.
