yes you can. The idea is smoke your steak or what ever and then use the sear box for the finish crust but you can grill on the sear box as it offers variable temps.
 
ok have yet to burn the sear box clean, and I am terrible at taking pictures, but smoked 4 pork chops and 2 NY strips last night. 2 chops rubbed in blackened seasoning and 2 in weber steak n chop, both strip steaks in blackened. They were just "grilled" at 400. Very nice, I overcooked the strips a bit, but everything was extremely tasty on the woodwind.

Doing a chuck roast for pulling, a single slice of salmon, a rib rack, and 2 Cornish hens today...
