I was watching some Dude on the cooking channel . He was using a foil packet for his wood chips. He used 1/2 dry chips and 1/2 wet chips. Placing the Wet chips on one side of the packet and the dry chips on the other. He claimed he got a much longer smoking time out of the packet. Thus it allowed him to only need one packet for the entire smoke.

It made a certain kind of sense to me. Almost like a minion method for wood chips.

Has anybody else done this??

No, but it makes sense. The dry chips burn up first, and the wet chips wait until the moisture has evaporated out before they start to smoke and burn up.

When I use chips I soak them overnight, and scatter them throughout the coal basket. The water in the chips has to evaporate before they burn.

So two things happen:
a) some of that evaporated moisture comes to the meat and helps keep it moist
AND
b) The chips don't burn away as rapidly, therefore increasing smoke time.

Yeah, it makes a great deal of sense.

I sometimes place soaked and non soaked chips in the chip pan and I think it does make the smoke last longer
