seenred seenred that sure looks like it’s going to be one nice smoker with possible other options…

However, now that being said… I’d hate for JLeonard JLeonard to have to keep pushing that heavy thing around, that’s liable to hurt a guy… so being the team player I am… I’ll offer to take one for the team and give it a good home! 😉

Justin, thats why I keep feeding this strapping boy here. He’s gonna be my pusher. Of course if you wanna come down when its finished and help get it around the house onto the patio, I’ll have cold beer and a few slabs of ribs to Christin it in its new home!
when seenred seenred starts the build I’ll need name ideas! So yall get your thinking hats on. i have an idea already but I want to see what the forum comes up with.

Man, Justin...I'm touched. I always knew you were much too generous! :emoji_wink:

It's so good of you to sacrifice like that for a brother smoker LOL! :emoji_laughing:

Hey now - don't let Justin hog all the beer and ribs! Pass some of that over this way! 🤤

Well - might as well post a very quick update. As I mentioned a couple days ago, I had to order some new consumables. They didn't get here until nearly dark yesterday (which, this time of year is barely past 5 o'clock!). I had to go pick up a trailer on the other side of Tulsa this morning, so I didn't get into the shop until well past lunch time.

All I really managed to accomplish was getting the first plate all plasma-cut out. I had all the cuts laid out last week, but then I realized that my lay-outs weren't accurate, because it turns out there wasn't a single square corner on this plate. Rookie mistake - just forgot to check it good before laying it out. So I had to get my laser out and square up a corner to use as the baseline - then all my other panels laid out pretty square and plumb.

Also kind of a challenge to manage this heavy mother working alone. Just takes longer to think it through and plan every cut so I don't end up dropping a couple hundred pounds of steel plate on my foot.

Anyway, the back and side panels of the Cook Chamber are cut. I'll get back in the shop probably Monday to get the 2nd plate on the sawhorses.

Here's the panels I got cut - the panels on the left are the front and back panels. I didn't appreciate it until I looked at the cut-out panels - this pit is gonna be a big'n! Jim will be able to put a ton of meat in this beast!

More to come!

Just for reference the inside dimensions of the X-Fire is 36” high by 40.5” wide….so yes Jim is going to have one serious cooker! I would love to cook on it!

Evening Friends!

I worked in the shop yesterday and today and got all the CC and FB panels cut out. As I mentioned in a previous post, the 5x10 plates I bought were not at all square. So I took extra time and care to square up every layout before plasma cutting.

img7.jpg

Below is the cook chamber. Already mentioned that the 4 tall panels on left and right are the sides and front/back, and the middle panels are top and bottom. The drop piece on the far right behind my little creeper stool is all that remains of the first 4x10 plate.

And below are the six panels of the fire box. Can't see it in these shots, but there was one decent-sized drop left from the second 4x10 plate. When I'm finished, there won't be much waste - I'll use what's left in those drops to fabricate some odds and ends as I go along (baffle/diffuser, water pan, dampers, etc.)

img10.jpg

So that's where I knocked off for today. My shop looks like a hurricane hit it LOL. I left tools laying everywhere, and running the plasma cutter makes a lot of dust - so I'll have to spend some time cleaning up before I get to the next step.

After I get the shop tidy again, my next tedious job will be metal prep. I'll grind all the mill scale off of every joint edge on those plates, and I'll probably go ahead and cut out the intake holes, the hole for the smoke stack, etc.

Then it'll finally be time to start welding some panels together! That's when a fab project starts getting fun!

Stay tuned!

Oh, I think you are going to like how quick the dimensional peace’s weld up vs round. The fab complexity between the copper pot and X-Fire were night and day…. Looking forward it coming together!

Yep - agreed. If you get all your cuts square, the fit up and assembly of 2 square boxes (or in this case, rectangular) is easier fabrication than doing the fit up on multiple shapes.
