I would very much like to build a UDS smoker and have a lead on some good clean drums.  The problem is they were used for roofing mastic that was in a plastic bag inside the drum.  Being that they are not food grade drums, should I do a number of burns to remove the epoxy paint from the inside?  Appreciate your help.

akrd, morning.... I would remove any mastic using mineral spirits or charcoal lighter fluid...  Then burn out for a few hours and remove any loose stuff that is left.....  Then oil and run a few practice smokes, without food, to condition the drum and the oil at 400-450 deg.. ..  The oil is like seasoning cast iron cookware.... Anything that is left, after the burn out at 1000 - 1500 deg, will not be a problem at 200-350 deg cooking temps....
