Hi new user here registered tonight to report back on the new model MES. Ordered the 40 inch from cabellas along with Todd's amnps. Seasoned it all Friday, smoked a couple racks of ribs and some chicken parts today. This is my first smoker so I basically just compiled tons of advice from this forum and followed the rules. Worked very well the food was great - would have been better if my family didn't make me wait 3 hours to serve it. Was still delicious. Anyway, my review of the smoker follows:

Fit and finish for assembly was ok, some screw holes didn't line up perfectly, took some elbow grease but overall not bad.

As I was putting the internal parts in, I noticed that the chip tray housing that covers the element was not attached to the wall. It seems to be welded to the wall in the new model, and my welds broke. The only thing holding it in was the support from the chip loader. Not good, but since I was using the amnps I powered through this problem. I will be calling masterbuilt tomorrow morning to see how they suggest fixing the problem...

The other issue I had was that the display on the remote was not fully functional. It shows only the top half of the figures. Since I also got the maverick thermometer from Todd, I wasnt too worried about the remote for monitoring, but I'll be asking masterbuilt for a new one in the morning.

One other slight issue, I found the chip loader was a little difficult to slide in and out. This might be related to the chip housing issue though.

Everything else about this smoker is great. The element held temp to a pretty tight band around 225 (215-235) with a set temp of 240. I opened the door quite a few times to check the ribs, add chicken, spray with apple juice, etc. temp recovery was very fast.

All in I am very happy with the unit. The broken chip housing and remote are major problems but I happen to be circumventing them anyway so it didn't matter.

Will update after I speak with masterbuilt about these flaws. Happy to answer anyone's questions about the new unit if there are details you want me to report on let me know. Can take pics, etc.

Wrinkles, evening..... here is what I did with the chip stuff.... GONE......

The electronics screwed up ???  Chip loader broken ???  You are a poster child for bad luck my friend....  Maybe your good attitude is why you got the lemon... You saved Masterbuilt from someone not as mild mannered.....  Keep up the great attitude and smoke on....  I'm ready for some Q-Views when you get time.....

OH YEAH, welcome to the forum.... this is a great place with great folks willing to share their recipes and help in any way they can... It can be addictive here so be forewarned....and enjoy the long smokey ride....

I got my mes 512 at Cabela's Friday. You are right about the chip tray, mine is just difficult to put in and out. Having trouble with the remote also. I will be calling them tomorrow. All in all I like it. Rained today so my chuckie will wait for tomorrow with Jeff's rub. Question! has anybody put on the rub and it rained so back in the fridge with the rub.?

Rubbed and back in the Refer? Happens all the time there is no worries. In fact you will see some great flavor. Think dry cured Bacon. The rub goes on and is refrigerated for several day and only gets better. Now you don't want to go more than 5-7 days with Beef, 3-4 with Pork, but a couple of days is fine...JJ

Wrinkles, I am sorry to hear of your problems, quality control and inspection should be a greater priority for the kind of money spent on these things. I would enjoy seeing a multitude of Pics of the Interior and the Exterior as well. I have a 2011 model and am interested in how much change was implemented. Especially changes to the Smoke box, Chip pan and the Drip tray on the floor of the box. My unit is 5 months old and has developed an intermittent problem with the electronic controler. I called Masterbuilt and without hesitation the Rep said she would send a new one out. I wish you a speedy resolution to your problems...JJ

Welcome!!!

I really would like to compare the new 2012 MES 40" with the older version.

For now, I just can't convince myself, that spending an extra $130 for the new version is worth it, especially when I have (3) of the previous models, that work just fine.

I too will be curios how Masterbuilt responds to your issues.

Todd

Wrinkles congrats on your new MES 40, it really is unfortunate that you received a defective unit.  When you talk to Masterbuilt ask them to clearly explain if the wood chip tray assembly in your model is suppose to be spot welded or screwed to the wall.  Spot welding is not a good idea, it prevents future clean outs and repairs or at least makes them seriously difficult.

It sounds like you soldiered through it thanks to your AWNPS and Maverick.

If the wood chip assy is spot welded you might want to keep your current one and just screw it to the wall, ( I like the idea of being able to easily disassemble stuff for repair or cleaning).  However regarding the controller definitely get a replacement.

Anyway welcome to SMF and the MES owners club here.

Just got off the phone with masterbuilt. They don't have any parts in stock and this is a repair that basically requires a whole new unit, so she says call cabelas and get a new one. Let's see how they handle it... My debate is since I'm using amnps is it even worth the hassle of unpacking assembly reseasoning? Thoughts?

Cabelas offers to send me a new one (I have to give the old one back) or I can keep it and get a 20% refund. They also adjusted my price because it's on sale now. Decisions decisions...

I use the AMNPS every time in mine, & I'd still go with the new one.  I'd always be worried that it had rough treatment in shipping, & that something else was gonna break.
