2012 gmg Daniel Boone grill problems!

I have a gmg older model and it just takes off. Tonight I smoked like crazy and went clear up to 680 degrees during its start up cycle! Why is this? Any help is appreciated

I am sure you keep it clean if its lasted you 8 years, but it may be worth checking the heat sensor is clean.
When you look at the Firepot did it overflow? Only other thing I can think is overfeed of pellets and generated big fire.
