I haven't used my electric smoker since I got my pellet smoker. I haven't experience any huge temperature swings with my treager, most I have seen is around a 10 degree swing.
It sounds like it's similar to mine.mine also has gaps in the front and back. Just make sure it's installed correctly, you don't want the drip pan to lay perfectly flat,at least in mine, as the drippings will fall into the smoker and not into the bucket on the outside.
