inaugural smoke complete, all seasoned and ready for ribs today. Learned what size logs are required to keep the smoker at 300/350 but it didn't hold temps for more than 30 before losing temps. The logs I got don't seem seasoned enough and start to smolder if there isn't enough original coal...
After dealing with Walmart for an hour because they lost my online order I purchased one already assembled. Got it home took it all apart and got the silicone put on with gaskets, extra thermostat, lava lock fire box, heat diffuser, and wagon wheels.

I started to take a hatchet too a few logs and break them in half to see how they look inside. By puck, do you mean in image two the log with the big dark circle? What about the logs with the white fungus/mold. Just toss those as well?

In anticipation of getting my offset I purchased some wood off craigslist from a local guy. Looking at the wood I just want to make sure it looks ok and I'm not going to get my family sick from using it. I have a bunch of oak and apple wood.

Yep, I am going to cut down the wood to smaller sizes to fit in my fire basket. I'll probably run mostly coal until I get a better handle on my smoker.
Thanks for the replies! I just got an oklahoma joe with mods on the way. I'm in Manassas currently, I contacted a few people around the area but seems they only do sales by the cord which is way more than I need. I had not thought about craigslist though, that's a great idea.

New to the forum but I just got my first wood burning/ charcoal smoker and wanted to know where others are buying their wood in the NOVA area. Looking for Hickory, apple wood, Oak, etc. Really excited to crack open a beer and watch some LOTRs while tending the fire :D.
