If you open both vents you will get more heat. Hot air rises . It needs somewhere to exit. That is why you weren't getting heat. This also traps old smoke inside the chamber which could be why the foul taste.

Well you could always make it into a nice looking unit- give it a beauty paint job..
I would keep 1 at the cottage( if you have 1)
Or just give it to someone who would put it to good use, unless you plan on cooking large amounts of meat where you will need both..

First attempt on my new GMG at some pulled pork.
I soaked it in some Dr. Pepper for a few hours. Then rubbed it. Let it sit over night. Placed it on the smoker at 8 am @ 225 and let it go.
Perfect time for it to rest for 1 hour then enjoy it and some cornbread while I watch the Raptors beat...
