Built a DIY PID with an Inkbird ITC-106vh controller.
Wondering if anybody has used this on a Masterbuilt 40.
I run a AMNPS tray in a mailbox mod .
Looking for the PID settings that worked for you. TIA
Find a used 40" MES on Craigslist,FB market place or wherever.Rewire it for a PID then do the mailbox mod and use an Amazen tube/tray in it.
You'll never have a better electric smoker for the money.
Welcome the SMF from Indiana. Glad to have ya!
Electric smokers can do the job but you end up having to constantly tend them a feeding chips. Most have done a mailbox mode to use them with a pellet tray which frees them from constantly feeding. Lots of threads here on the mailbox mod for MES...
Welcome to SMF! Yes the MES units are known for being inaccurate. Most here have gone the way of putting in a PID which does an excellent job AND many have done the mailbox mod which frees up feeding wood chips.
Initially, I put a 12” square concrete paver wrapped in foil on the bottom rack to act as a heat sink and help stabilize the temp. It helped a little.
The temp control problem is the wood chips burning in the cabinet. Once they get going, they add a lot of heat that you can’t control. Do a...
Thanks....I asked because I picked up an MES30 on Craigslist and bought the Master Built Slow Smoker bolt-on. I have not hooked it up yet, and I was wondering if you were perhaps using it.
Hey guys. I have a MES 30 cabinet that I modified with an Inkbird PID and different burner and use the mailbox mod for smoke. The only issue I am having is the when hanging summer sausage or snack sticks the bottom (closer to burner) is cooking faster than the top. I tried a fan to even out...
Good smoker. I used a pellet tray when I had mine for a little extra smoke but not necessary. When I used it I would keep the chip loader halfway out for good airflow for it. You’ll be happy with it. Look into the mailbox mod if you’re interested. I never did it when I had mine but it seems to...
Great info here. I still have one but don't use it.
I would add use another termo in it to get the right temp. I used a sawdust tray in mine. I had to repair the wiring in mine and replace the heating element
Mailbox mod would be a nice addition but a little more work than a digital masterbuilt (MES) as the MES already has the hole thanks to the chip loader.Or a Bella style smoke generator might be the better option.
I agree with @02ebz06. You're likely going to have issues finding a pellet smoker that can go low enough. I have a traeger and the lowest setting is 180f, with a +/-20f temp swing on either side.
I'd second the vertical electric smokers since you have the ability to run them a much lower...
