A 20 lb bag of pellets used only for smoke in a MES should last a LONG time. That's what I do with my MES40 and mailboxmod. I'm working my way through a bag of mesquite/oak blend. It's fantastic! I'm glad we like it, because it's gonna last me another 2-3 years!
I love to buy more flavors...
There’s videos of people mixing pellets and small chips right into the hopper. Recteq has a pretty good auger motor, I don’t see why it wouldn’t work. I personally haven’t tried it, just like I haven’t bought the charcoal pellets either. I have a kettle, I have an offset, they have their own...
Thanks....I asked because I picked up an MES30 on Craigslist and bought the Master Built Slow Smoker bolt-on. I have not hooked it up yet, and I was wondering if you were perhaps using it.
I agree about ribs! I love doing baby back and st louis style in my mes40 with mailboxmod. So easy and so tasty! So many different ways to cook them, too.
I love pastrami, too. Costco sells ready-made sliced, frozen heat-and-eat stuff, and it's GREAT for Reuben sammies. I've looked into...
Hey guys. I have a MES 30 cabinet that I modified with an Inkbird PID and different burner and use the mailbox mod for smoke. The only issue I am having is the when hanging summer sausage or snack sticks the bottom (closer to burner) is cooking faster than the top. I tried a fan to even out...
Good smoker. I used a pellet tray when I had mine for a little extra smoke but not necessary. When I used it I would keep the chip loader halfway out for good airflow for it. You’ll be happy with it. Look into the mailbox mod if you’re interested. I never did it when I had mine but it seems to...
@KonaRich the only thing you'll accomplish using a PID this way is turning your MES off after the temp set on the PID is reached. It would be no different than simply unplugging your smoker and then plugging it back in.
Then you'll need to turn the MES back on at the control panel, reset the...
Great info here. I still have one but don't use it.
I would add use another termo in it to get the right temp. I used a sawdust tray in mine. I had to repair the wiring in mine and replace the heating element
Hi there and welcome.
Yeah @normanaj is completely correct!
The PID would be cutting power Off to the entire MES. That means no power to the controller and heating element so it is effectively unplugging the MES.
Then when it turns power back on, I believe the MES is no longer set to be "on"...
Mailbox mod would be a nice addition but a little more work than a digital masterbuilt (MES) as the MES already has the hole thanks to the chip loader.Or a Bella style smoke generator might be the better option.
I agree with @02ebz06. You're likely going to have issues finding a pellet smoker that can go low enough. I have a traeger and the lowest setting is 180f, with a +/-20f temp swing on either side.
I'd second the vertical electric smokers since you have the ability to run them a much lower...
The MES shouldn’t smoke anyone out. If anything that will make your neighbors mad is smelling it and not being able to eat it haha. The MES’s that I’ve had burn really clean either with the wood chip tray or pellet maze. I’ve never ran into an issue with wind since it’s sealed pretty well I...
