Built a DIY PID with an Inkbird ITC-106vh controller.
Wondering if anybody has used this on a Masterbuilt 40.
I run a AMNPS tray in a mailboxmod .
Looking for the PID settings that worked for you. TIA
Find a used 40" MES on Craigslist,FB market place or wherever.Rewire it for a PID then do the mailboxmod and use an Amazen tube/tray in it.
You'll never have a better electric smoker for the money.
...from Indiana. Glad to have ya!
Electric smokers can do the job but you end up having to constantly tend them a feeding chips. Most have done a mailboxmode to use them with a pellet tray which frees them from constantly feeding. Lots of threads here on the mailboxmod for MES electric smokers.
...use my offset or drum smoker. I will sometimes use my drum for one basket of wood coals, then transfer over to the pellet grill on long smokes, kinda a pain in the ass, but it works great.
I wonder if you can add a mailboxmod to a pellet grill????? And use chips and chunks for flavor/fuel???
Welcome to SMF! Yes the MES units are known for being inaccurate. Most here have gone the way of putting in a PID which does an excellent job AND many have done the mailboxmod which frees up feeding wood chips.
...wood chips burning in the cabinet. Once they get going, they add a lot of heat that you can’t control. Do a search on smoke generators (Mailboxmod). These burn the chips outside the cabinet, sending the smoke in, but less heat. I think this helps the most.
The next effective mod is adding a...
There’s videos of people mixing pellets and small chips right into the hopper. Recteq has a pretty good auger motor, I don’t see why it wouldn’t work. I personally haven’t tried it, just like I haven’t bought the charcoal pellets either. I have a kettle, I have an offset, they have their own...
Thanks....I asked because I picked up an MES30 on Craigslist and bought the Master Built Slow Smoker bolt-on. I have not hooked it up yet, and I was wondering if you were perhaps using it.
Hey guys. I have a MES 30 cabinet that I modified with an Inkbird PID and different burner and use the mailboxmod for smoke. The only issue I am having is the when hanging summer sausage or snack sticks the bottom (closer to burner) is cooking faster than the top. I tried a fan to even out...
...I used a pellet tray when I had mine for a little extra smoke but not necessary. When I used it I would keep the chip loader halfway out for good airflow for it. You’ll be happy with it. Look into the mailboxmod if you’re interested. I never did it when I had mine but it seems to be very...
Great info here. I still have one but don't use it.
I would add use another termo in it to get the right temp. I used a sawdust tray in mine. I had to repair the wiring in mine and replace the heating element
