wsm stinks after burnoff

I just got my wsm and lit it up last night to burnoff any product manufacturing left behind,  It got pretty hot and now it really stinks smells kinda toxic if that makes any sense.  Has anyone heard of this happening?  Can I clean it out and it will be good or should I stop using it?

what were you using to burn it off with?  I didn't notice an issue when I seasoned mine per Harry Soo

Well thats the instructions I was following but i didnt get to the part where he got to the smoking the fat and bacon ect.  I just did the first burnoff with pretty much just the charcoal

I didnt notice any residue in or on mine and just started out smoking a butt.

The only other thing in there was the tin foil I used to wrap the  water pan.  I was doing the Harry Soo method but like I said never got past the first burn.

I tried to post a pic of what appears to be a residue of some sort, but since I'm new a Mod has to approve it, so I don't know when that will be. Is it possible to melt the pain inside the wsm?

It's not paint but a hardened power coated material.  It's the same stuff they do all their black grills with and it's made to handle heat as grills can be brought up to 700 degrees or so.

If it was a new WSM, the above would apply, but if you got it used from someone they may have put paint on the inside for some reason?

no it was brand new.  okay so at least it wasn't the paint, or powder coat whatever it is :)  Could a bad batch of charcoal make a weird smell or could it just be because I didn't cook anything on it?

When I seasoned mine I didn't notice a toxic smell.   I can't tell you why you may have smelled an off odor. 

BTW - pardon my thought that you may have used lighter fluid or matchlight.  Stubb's is good stuff - I use it often.  I have never run into a bad batch.

I used damp brickettes once and that had a odd smell to it.  But if you were using Stubbs lump, that can't be the issue then.

That photo you added does not look unusual.  Must just be the factory coating on top of the powder coated ceramic I guess.  Need to get some meat in there and let the protective coating of smoke & meat fumes start to build up. 

I suspect it's just the new smell and will quickly go away when you throw some meat in there.

Mine had a bit of a funny smell on the first burn...toss in some hickory next time and let the TBS flow...it will smell good then.

I recently got the WSM 18.5

Rinsed all the inside, racks, water pan and seasoned the normal way.

I only smell good Q.
