Hi all,

It's been a while since I've been on here - got an electric smoker some years ago, used it several times, learned quite a bit on it. Wife says the ribs I make these days are better than the ones at the local bbq joints (not sure if I believe that, but I'll take it :) )

Anyway, I'm possibly looking at getting a WSM 18.5" Cooker Smoker (charcoal) soon. I've seen a few things on here talking about mods to the smoker, getting a new thermometer instead of using the one included with the smoker, etc., but wondering if anyone out there has suggestions as to the best mods to make, tips for having the best possible success with the smoker, etc.

Thanks!

David

Leave the original thermometer and get a remote digital thermometer. In my opinion,no mods necessary for a WSM.Some people gasket the door and lid, other people bolt on lid hinges and new door assemblies etc.The latter probably ran spinners on their cars years ago...

Best advise I can give you is use it for a period of time. Let it season up - then see what if any mods are needed. It isn't worth throwing money at a problem that may not be there in the first place. I haven't modded a thing on my 22" and it works just fine.

Good advice above . I have a 14 " . I did replace the lid therm with a river country , under 10 bucks . Also fix the charcoal grate to the ring , so you can shake it out . Those were just " comfort " things , ease of use . My opinion , cooks great right out of the box . Ran mine yesterday , full of pork steaks . It's a machine , and easy on fuel .

Only mod I've done to mine is put the Kamado type felt gasket on the lid and door, now no leaks. The stock thermometer is accurate but not measuring temp at cooking grate that's why you need a digital thermometer like a Thermopro.

I have the 22.5 and I have added the door upgrade. To me, it made a huge difference in controlling air flow and some heat retention. I’d get this without question IMO.

I have the lid hinge installed as well, but I would not say it’s a must.

I agree with the others in securing the charcoal ring to the lower grate.
