Hi guys love the forum new to smoking and learning a lot was just curious why I've seen a number of YouTube videos with people putting whole logs on the cooking grate I think I know why or at least a few reasons why but was just curious

Ok wood chunks on a gas grill or charcoal grill grate is a good way to get some smoke flavor on something your grilling.
But putting it on the grate in a smoker is going to do nothing. It will never get hot enough to give off any smoke.

Thanks for the answer...yea I did not think it would get hot enough to create smoke ...I think its to preheat the logs
