Wood? Elm?

Had a large Elm tree that died cut down. Wife asked if she should tell the guys doing the work to save some for the smoker. I told her I didn't think so..

I assume I made the right decision - I have never heard of Elm for grilling or smoking - and can't even find reference, pro-or-con in a google search, or a search here.

Is it good for anything?

Elm is not one you want to use so you were right about that part. If you don't have a fireplace or have fires burn in the yard just offer it up to a friend who uses a wood furnace or fireplace.

My understanding is that most deciduous trees are ideal candidates for smoking. I did a google of that word and smoking and first link is old SMF page with a long list of woods....

Burning in a fireplace or wood stove... Elm burns HOT and pops and cracks a lot because of all the pitch...

When cutting firewood in my younger days we would always give a city boy a log of elm to split. The twisted grain made it a tough chore. We got a laugh and tossed in on the burn pile.
