I am pretty new to this and need just a little bit of help on smoking multiple items.  I am planning on smoking a pork butt and three racks of bbr's for a Monday dinner.  My first idea was to start the butt early a.m. on Monday and then throw the bbr's in later in the morning, planning on having them finish around the same time (sometime late afternoon to give myself a buffer in case the meat takes a little longer then expected and to rest).

If I put them in on top of each other am I going to over-smoke my butt or should I start my butt late Sunday to finish early Monday morning and not have them smoking on top of each other.  Also, I guess I could finish the butt off in the oven.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Pig is Pig, sure smoke them in the same cook . Judge the time for the Butt @ 1.5 to 2hrs. per pound and addsome , you can hold it in a drink cooler (warmed by Sun or warm water) ,wrapped in foil (twice ) and wrapped in a towel. The BB's will take around 5 hrs. total (that's using the 2hrs. in 225*f then wrapped in foil for 2hrs. (with a little juice in them) then 1hr. out of the foil to firm-up.

Don't give-up on the Butt , it may stall on you ,  but let the Butt go until it is at 200*f or so to be pulled , will be tender and break-up easy...

Have fun and...

Who knows?

The ribs are more reliable by time if cooked by a proven method.

The butts?  They can test your patience. Over cooking the butt would be the least of my worries.  Getting them done at the same time is a trickier deal.

Good luck and good smoking.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Didn't think much about the altitude, even though I see it on everything I bake. I think I'll just throw the butt in a little earlier than planned and keep out wrapped up if it gets done a little earlier. Off to shop for meat in the morning!
