I post replies when I can add to the discussion. I start a thread when I really need help. What bothers me is people that post things like "I don't have this smoker, but someone will come along to help you". Are they for pathetically looking for points, or just looking to achieve a great number of posts. I realize that this post will irritate some people, but hey, I guess that I am looking to have a great informative forum without going through all the ego's. This has been bothering me for the last six months.
It doesn't bother me at all when someone posts something to the effect that someone will be along soon to help. A lot of times someone who is looking for help gets their post burried so far down in the board that people may not notice it. Someone who can really help this poster out with some information and they may not see the post. Sometimes a little bump in the post gets it back up to the top of the board and it gets noticed and that person gets their help. I don't think anyone is trying to get points or trying to reach a certain amount of posts.
I help when I can also, I bump when I feel it will help another post get recognized and helped, I welcome a new member when I feel I have not been out numbered by a lot of cookie cutter welcome here posts. I feel your pain.
There is a lot of great information and friends to be made here, but I know what you mean
When i was just a newb I posted for constructive suggestions and help, as a sophmore I posted out of shear enjoyment of what I had learned and still for constructive suggestions. Now that I have been doing this for some time I don't post as often unless it is a event or maybe something a bit different. I do reply to posts when I feel I have something to offer. I try to welcome new members from time to time but I must say I have not been as diligent at this as I could be. Am I perfect? Hell no! Do I still learn? Hell yes!
I have to post so many times a day if I do not I will forget how and if I forget how then when I have something important to say then I will not know how !!!!!!!!!!!!
I post for two reasons One to obtain information, and two to give information. I hope that does not offend anyone. If it does I will keep my opinions to my self and move on to where I'am more appreciated.
For starters, I'm a newbie to smoking foods, and new to this forum, so I have a lot of questions. When I first logged on to this wonderful forum, I was welcomed by many, that showed me that this forum was full of people happy to share their knowledge of smoking, and I appreciated that, so when I see a fellow newbie to this forum, I welcome them, even if it is cookie cutter, I do it in hopes the feel the same appreciation that I felt. Also, being new to smoking foods, there is a lot of foods that I have never cooked, or seen, so when someone puts in the work, and is willing to share what the did with pics, and how they did it, I like to let them know that I appreciate that by telling them great job, I would think it makes them feel good to know their peers appreciate what they did, and offer advice or ask questions. And last but not least, I was born in this great country, so I do believe, even though some may like to argue this notion, that I have the right to free speech, and free press, I don't think I've ever offended anybody here, and if I have I apologize, I may occasionally throw in a sarcastic one liner, but that's just how I am, I'm a proud American who has the freedom to be able to converse with anyone.
You will find that this forum is nothing like others.. on most forums, folks get yelled at if they ask a question without searching first, or if they make posts that don't "seem" to have a lot of substance.
On the SMF, it is ok to ask stupid questions, after all there are NO stupid questions. If you don't know how to search then fine, ask away and no one will yell at you or act like you are stupid for not searching.
If you say hello in the Roll Call forum then it is possible that 500 people will say, "Glad to have you on board" and I highly encourage that here.
If you don't know the answer to a question and you feel the need to let the person know that someone will be along soon then that is ok as well.
This is forums done better so don't get hung up on what is kosher or not kosher on other forums.
We are the best forum hands down and it is because we know how to make folks feel welcome and we are happy to answer the same question over and over if that is required.
Just felt like that needed to be said.. don't let our "better" way of handling things bother you
Originally I posted with the intent of getting help from those with more experience. Since then, I'll post a new smoke, but more to the point, I like to offer help for those that are in the same position that I was once in. It's payback time and I'm doing it with a smile.
Agreed... Bump a post to keep it at the top. I'm a relatively short timer here myself and I have spent the better part of my time searching and reading vs. making shallow replies in the main forums. I dip into Roll Call once and again to spread the warm welcome I received when I first chimed up..
I like to stay engaged in the discussions I enter and not toss my $0.02 into every thread available...
Hey if I start a thread and no one responds to it than I feel that maybe it was a stupid ?, so if someone responds and says "sorry not real sure but someone will be on shortly to answer ya" then at the least I know that someone is reading it. Keep up the little comments!!!!!
