KCBS Sponsors a State Comp here in Huntsville every year on the 1st weekend of March.  I was a helper on the non--comp side and did get to smoke foods.  I also got to help with some of the prep of the comp stuff.  We didnt place this year....but I had a total BALL!  Have never been around a comp before ....and I got my feet wet...Literally.  We had almost 4 inches of hard rain starting about 10pm Friday night and it stopped about 2:30 on Saturday.  The whole place was a muddy mess.  But ...the pro area is on a parking lot...the Amateurs were in a muddy sloppy grassy area.  They were mucked up over their ankles.  Here are some pics!

a monster Meadow Creek smoker...and yes...I did get to smoke chicken and some other things on it...after the comp food were turned in.

We did ABT's....the these cute girls helped me finish them.  We smoked them in my smoker

some of the Prep stuff...the Big Guy is Ben..the pitmaster of the weekend.

more preps

My set up for cooking for over 100 folks that would be stopping by...and for the workers

We even had fried catfish and bass for the weekend.

Here is some of the set up areas

Some of the Guys in the "shade tree" behind us...their Smoker was named Bertha and was huge

Chicken time in the prep area

Had a blast....I do have some more pictures.  Just need to load them.  This was a blast....and I swear we were talking about making an ark outta some pallets that were there!

Thanks for looking!

Glad you had fun.  Are you planning on doing competition cooking yourself?
A bunch of the folks there told me that I need to.  I have my 2 best friends..(.Pam and Gail)....that are willing to do Comps with me.  Pam is a member here.  We are trying to come up with names for a 3 gal team.  We want something that has a catchy name...but isn't nasty.  Needs something with Southern Stuff in it.

Kat

The name HAS to be GRITS!

Girls Raised in the South!

Thanks for sharing the pics. Looks like a great time was had by all!
LOL....that would be a good one....just dont wanna get into Copyright trouble....that would not be fun....but maybe a spin on that!  SeenRed came up with Southern Belle-BQ....liked it too.

We did have fun...just wish we had placed.  Saying "We"....cuz...I was on the fun side...watching and doing my own thing.  Happy I got to play with the "big boy toys"...and show that a girl could smoke too!  (Just needed help raising the doors on the Meadow Creek....too tall and too heavy for me!  I am a shorty!

You definitely should.  A friend and I have done a couple of comps and it was a lot of fun.  Too bad the only one I know of that we could do this year was cancelled.

Not sure on a name for you but if I think of something I will run it by you.

Kat,

Looks like fun.  I had a buddy in the comp as well.  He did the brisket for his tam which placed 54 of 64 but said he will do it again in a minute.  I went a bit farther south to the big race weekend where we same a LOT of rain as well.

As far as your team name: Sweet Heat.

Ben placed a bit lower over all than your bud.  He did his best in ribs at 38.  But...what the hey!

We have a name tho!  Cotton Piggin' BBQ...and my daughter is drawing up the logo....she is adorable...and a bit sexy too (meaning the Piggie in the logo).  BUT I do like Sweet Heat!
