I enjoy smoking in the winter and seem to have more time to do so. With a gosm one of the best things is the ability to cold smoke; cheese, beef jerky, salmon, etc are all easily doable where in the summer it's difficult to hold temps low enough. Come on snow!

I might wear flip flops instead of going barefoot, and might throw on a t-shirt instead of going shirtless...I might even be able to do some cold smoking a few nights during the winter if I'm lucky, it's been too long since I've been able to smoke some cheese.

Just another reason to live in So CA - good to smoke year round

In the winter, I wear a coat and stand close to the fire box.

I keep my smokers under the covered patio during the winter (and yes, the Lang fits). The wind blows from the south or the west and the house does a good job of blocking the wind.

How hard is it to keep the meat on the racks during all them thar earthquakes???

Ok I'm with piney too on this one we smoke all year and sometimes I have to put on a jacket too.

I tend to cook less when its really cold but I still smoke alot even in teh winter. Its a tradition for us to have a smoked turkey on christmas or thanksgiving....

I use a couple of Pop-up tents to do my inclement weather cooking. One has sides to attach and I have a Tarp I use to extend the area or go around the other Pop-up I have; my Son(Hijo)has a salamander heater and we use that in cold weather. You'd be surprised at the warmth just the walled one provides.A lenght of A/C conduit, the Salamander and some duct tape make for a beautiful heater.
I'll be erecting the set-up tomorrow and will post Pics. along with the prep. and cooking Q-view.
NOW, as for switching to an SnP, here's a method I use for heat and smoke in my units.

Hope this helps and
SMOKE HAPPY

Stock up the freezer with PP, SB, etc, when you have good weather. I still smoke when it's ugly out (yeah, I'm a die-hard). If the weather is so bad that I just don't feel like fighting it, I bust into the freezer and do a re-heat of something from my stash.

Someone just posted something about having more TIME to smoke in the Winter. Brilliant! You just made me like Winter more than I already did!

I mean, I don't love the sub-zero temps and 14" snows, but they sure as hell don't get me down TOO much. However, all the weekend trips with the kids, the ballgames, family deals out of town - none of that will be going on in the Winter so I should be able to smoke a lot more often.

Oh, and I'd never trade the good weather in FL or CA, for the calm and sanity of the Midwest - never!

Live in the "snow belt" in N.E. Ohio and its not called that for chits and grins! I have a GOSM (Kenmore) and I smoke all winter long - I have a large sheet of plastic paneling that I use for a wind break as wind is the only thing that will affect the smokers temps.
In fact - winter is my favorite time to smoke stuff. Nice fire in the wood burner, watching football and relaxing with a cold barley pop and check my maverick remote from time to time.

I started with a Brinkman but knew there was no way to smoke in the winter so I bought a insulated BWS and so far so good. The coldest weather that I have smoked in this year was in the 40s, though. Worst thing about the cold for me is I don't want to sit outside and drink cold PBRs. Still gonna smoke though.

My Traeger pellet pooper seems to do just fine in the cold. I throw a moving blanket over the top of the chamber and it's fine. Here's a smoke I did last year (Prime Rib) and it came out great.

The Traeger.....it was in the single digits that day.

The prime rib in the smoker...

Off the smoker resting for a few....

And the finished results.....I gotta do one of these soon....lol

If this fails, I'll bye a ticket to Florida, I hear Jerry can use a hand...lol

dress in layers man and shuvel a path to smoker... so you be ready for when it gets really cold out..... that is the truth man!!!

ya it is pretty rough in the winter-here I have to make sure I have a clean pair of shorts and tank-top,oh and after summer a new pair of flip flops don't hurt either-enjoy winter all!

hey fire it up, why dont you do what the rest of your new york brothers do? move to Miami it was a cool 91 degrees today, we are looking forward to the big cold front moving through this weekend. it could get down to the 80s, maybe in the 70s overnight. if it keeps getting this cold during winter i might have tobreak out a flannel shirt in winter. sometimes if i want to cold smoke a cheese i have to put ice in the smoker, shut the door, just to keep the cheese from melting i dont think ive turned my heater on for about five years. winter just means we can turn the ac off and open the windows. for about one week!

Last year, -25° an I was out there. This year, shop is heated an the smoker will be sittin in there!

Hey, ya just gotta do what ya gotta do! I gotta go to work no matter what the weather be, so I might just as well fire up the smoke box! I did insulate the GOSM last year. It sure made a difference, could actually get er up ta temp in the bitter cold.

Well Jim,

Let me think about that one, with all the Florida guys at 27° N latitude going from barefoot and topless to flip flops and t-shrits, ....and I'm at 17° S latitude..........., hmmm, I guess I have to respond with, "What's winter?"

Here's looking in your direction.

Incidentally, that pic is taken from where I work and that is Point Venus on the left, the first place Capitan Cook landed in Tahiti.
