Want to build smokehouse, worried about fire box placement

I was wanting to build a smokehouse 8' x 8' x 8' and would like to know how large to make the fire box and how far away it should be from the house. Also i would like to find out about the type of venilation it would need. Any help please, also any one that has built one like i want would love your ideas.
