That was my feeling as well. Ive been to MX a dozen times before this year. There are sketchy areas near all towns, but this cartel backlash is bad. US gvmt is making trouble around the globe. I would screen international travel carefully and make sure you are going to a US friendly place. I think lots of countries kinda hate us right now.
